Wait, what? (ping to Asian servers vs American servers)

I connect to American servers and get 200-300ms (usually around 200 on good days). Connect to ANY Asian server (even though they are much closer to where I live), around 450ms to Korean servers, 550+ to Chinese servers, I even get around 450ms when connecting to an Indonesian server (and that's even closer then the previous servers). What gives?

Did a tracert to www.nexon.net (North America) and www.mabinogi.com (South Korea), my ISP always seems to go through a server in Singapore first (SingTel) (wdf?) before connecting to the server I requested.

well, your data gets sent (the fastest way) through physical cables connected to machines. they work really hard to lay down those cables in the oceans you know! and there aren't an infinite number of them, so they can only take a certain number of limited paths before going to a certain place, much like highways and roads. it also depends on the quality and quantity of the cables and machines (routers) in an area, and also the politics/regulations of information in the countries. (For example China filters incoming and outgoing information because it considers some parts of internet harmful to their citizens) And if it was transmitted by satellite it can take upto a second (1000ms) to transmit the data in to space and back!

No, I was just pinging to any Asian servers. Not specifically Nexon ones.
