You're not giving 4chan enough credit.
On JP and A, only about 1/5 threads will include something vulgar. 3/4 threads will be a common held discussion about random things involving otaku or anime.
And then 1/5 threads will be something incredibly epic. It really balances itself out if you're mature enough to not flip a table about running into a naked picture every once in a while.
In fact, I'm going on right now.

Thread one: Discussion about the scanlation of Saki being released tomorrow. Hilarious discussing and picture sharing ensues, not ONE lewd image appears. There is about 80 replies already.
Thread two: A troll posts a wallpaper, everyone says "That belongs in /w/". Nothing else happens.
Thread three: Someone whines about how A never talks about a manga called Beck, and how good it is. A beings to make fun of itself about how it never talks about anything good while posting funny pictures. Nothing lewd.
Thread four: Discussing the differences between the Black Lagoon anime and manga, and character developments. Nothing lewd.
Thread five: "Your favorite horror mangas" discussion. Some violent images are posted, but those are straight from those horror mangas.
Thread six: There is a K-ON and Pedobear joke thread, however there is not one lewd image making this thread actually funny as hell. Example:

Its the wall paper board. Everyone shares their desktop wallpaper collections. Greatest place to get good images.
Let me go through JP.
Thread 1: A Team Fortress Touhou thread. Its awesome.
Thread 2: A thread that starts as a Mokou + Cirno thread turns into a grammar nazi thread. Overall pretty funny.
Thread 3: A "What if" thread about "the wife of your dreams". Content is rated 18+ for sure, but there is nothing terribly wrong with this thread.
Thread 4: A thread about Umineko. 18+ content ensues. Cannot discuss on these forums, but its funny as hell.
Thread 5: A request asking what the OP's picture is from. People answer. People discuss.
Thread 6: Discussing Illya's hair color. Strange.
Thread 7: Thread linking to a video with Zun without his head. Everyone screams end of the world and apocalypse.
Thread 8: Touhou Hisoutensoku match making thread. People are sharing their IP's and playing Touhou.
Thread 9: Shougi match making thread. Same as above.

Of the (literal) hundreds of images posted, only 2 I considered was too lewd to post here on mabination.
Of the (literal) thousands of posts in these threads, only a dozen or two had "adult content".
If I switched to /b/, however, you could probably imagine whatever you had in your mind to be exactly as it is.
4chan is an awesome place to blast off some boredom and collect a large number of great images.
You see, its actually against the rule to post "off topic". If you're posting in /A/, you're damn well posting an Anime and Manga thread/post. If you post Hentai in /A/, you get reported, and a moderator will arrive within 1~10 minutes and move it to /H/.
And if you're browsing /H/, thats your own fault.
I may be over glorifying it, since I just refreshed /a/ and found a thread with some raep in it. But these threads aren't popular, they'll die pretty fast.
