Well this morning, I was playing Maplestory and I began thinking after looking at the Reaper Skill and the percentages...
There are certain things in probability that sound better than others even though they mean the same thing.
Let's take 10% for example. By itself it's like meh...However let's split that up into fractions!
10% -> 10/100 -> 1/10. 10/100 sounds meh...1/10 though and you go oh wow, that's very probable that it would happen.
Now let's compare it to 1% -> 1/100.
In terms of the mind 1% -> 10% doesn't seem like a big deal.
When you bring it to it's first fraction it's 1/100 vs 10/100. Still not a big deal right. Woopie do, 9 more.
However, Compare 1/100 to 1/10. It's the same comparison as before(1% verses 10%) but now you go, oh wow, that's more probable to happen (Compared to 1/100 and 10/100).
Anyways, has anyone else thought in depth of Math and how we as humans perceive numbers :what:

Wait, how's 1/100 the same as 10/100 (1/10).

EXACTLY!
But yeah I've seen that. That's why we all ways make it the smallest numbers possible right?
Or you could do 9000.5/90000
Then you could be all like:
ZOMG it's over 9000!

OVER 9000?! THAT CANT BE RIGHT
9000/9000 is over 1 ._.

because statistically speaking, 1/10 sample is much less valid than 10/100, the greater the numbers the greater the statistical reliability and validity because more tests or trials were conducted to get such a number. thus, the greater the amount of items implies a better and more reliable probability.
also, the reason 1/10 is seems less than 10/100 is because we do not usually think the numbers in terms of probability or mathematics. For example, 1/10 at first will always be perceived as meaning 1 out of 10 apples thus you only have 1 apple left, whereas 10/100 means that you have 10 apples left. We always see 1 thing as a constant amount if they are being compared. 1 means 1 unit and 10 means 10 units.

1/100 AND 10/100 ARE DIFFERENT!!!
Q~Q
0.01 AND 0.1

It's because of your familiarity with the numbers.
If I said there's a 1000000000000/10000000000000 chance for it to happen, you'd probably just ignore what I said.

My wording must not have been clear.
I was saying 10% -> 10/100 -> 1/10 was the same thing.
I then went on to say that 1/10 sounds to be the most probable of the 3. I'll relook at what I said and clarify that more.
Okay ya, I can see where you guys were confused. It was early this morning when I wrote it up. It sounded good to me at the time and I thought it was clear. Looking at it through your guys lens and I can see where it would have sounded that way.

That's still 10% but that number is really hard to read and would make me just go :what: instead of making much meaning of it. Oh yes, I'm such a math geek that I went and counted the 0's on both sides.

^ That was my point.
You're familiar with 1 being small, 10 being big, and 100 being even bigger.
So what you think is biggest at just one glance? Small/Big, or Big/Bigger?

At the core it's hard to make percentages and fractions sound good. That's why commercials use the words most, majority, etc. in their ads.

the media is a good example when thinking about numbers, but most skewed statistics come in graphs where they manipulate the range on purpose to make it seem like a more dramatic difference visually when it really isnt to make people react more strongly.

Percentages are tricky... Many people think g13 will mean a huge boost to bolt magic and say 'omg but you'll get 40% more damage if you use X combination of enchants and whatnot!!!'. Seriously, what's 40% of 80? Percentage variations are insignificant unless they compound with large numbers, as Kenero wisely said in another thread (Fireball and Fire Magic Mastery).

40% is a very large percentage, but of course the bigger picture is more important. They tend to be only one factor in a long formula.
assuming basic knowledges of %, I'm pretty sure that last bit was common sense. silly kids need to stay in school.
