I can get wanting to take different offers but to me it's simply not cricket to agree at a price and then say "oh sorry, someone else offered x amount". it betrays the inherent mutual trust between sellers and undermines the integrity (Ha! What integrity?!) of private sales.

I usually just use people's shops because trades never really work for me :/
I always have people asking for my stuff when I'm wearing it too -_- it gets annoying. If I'm wearing it, I'm not going to trade/sell it. There was this guy once who would NOT leave me alone, asking if I would give him my blue Wis :|
And then who are people that think I'm stupid enough to trade my expensive stuff for their cheap stuff. Someone wanted to trade my Emerald's coat for their newbie wear. Uh nty :|
OH and then there was someone asking for my blue+white goggle hat, which was given to me by a friend. They asked if I would give it to them for 2k -_- I won't ever trade that hat anyway since my friend gave it to me.

Aww isn't that cute? I mean if someone wanted to trade me crap... whoops I mean cheap items for an expensive item, like the above bolded part, I would have found that adorable. That's such a newbie move, it's so cute xD

But isn't it cute when they make up a sales pitch? Like a really funny one:
"Huh, why are you selling Average Firewood for 10k per stack?"
"Because these aren't your common firewood that you chop from some common tree with some common axe...
"... no this is AVERAGE firewood, the firewood that's better than Firewood! I'm sure you're...
... curious, isn't average firewood, just firewood? Ah, but that's the thing... this is the average grade of
... THE BEST GRADE firewood! It is the average of the best, much better than the common ones you get off trees...
... My friend, this is a steal! This firewood will increase enchant burn rates as well as lower your chance in refining, tell me
... Do you know any common firewood that just does that?"
"uh no... but"
"There you have it! For such amazing average grade firewood, 10k is a steal! Imagine, is 10k too much just for that extra enchant burn success or that higher chance for failure! Nay, I say!
...I heard a friend selling this for 20k per stack! So get yours today!"
xD
You remind me of when I made a sales pitch for a berry diet. It was mainly ignored b/c I am unknown to the majority of people.

"Can I trade for your Bat Boots?"
"Am I wearing them?"
"Yes."
"And am I advertising them for sale?"
"No."
"Because I want to wear them and they're not for sale. No."
Took me forever to get my boots, I'm not about to let them go. >.<Besides, they offer STUFF. Blegh.

You just described one of the key reasons why i refuse to do business with people anymore. I give up. I don't take offers for things in my house anymore either because I'm sick of dealing with stupidity. I don't care how big of an ass I am for it, I worked hard for what I have and I'd rather get the worth for it than a crap load of stupid items. If you want something - buy it. I will gladly hold something for someone but thats it anymore.
Reminds me of the otherside version for sellers that i just dealt with to cause my dramatic "NO" policy.
People who want an expensive item that you have so they offer something roughly the same value but after the agreement is made to trade they start going off "oh uhm.. would you maybe add in another item for this?". If I have "No trades" but I'm still willing to deal with you just be bloody glad I'm dealing with you. If someone asks me if there is anything I want i always say "nothing" because I have the money to buy what i want, I don't need your garbage.
I just say no now. Unless it's an item i actually really want (which are all worth 5m+ and end game items) I wont give you the time of day unless your from nation, in my guild, or a friend.

Yea I totally hear ya on that. I love it when people try to play up items too :T
Still I am also guilty of sometimes making stupid decisions that might sometimes piss someone off but I really try not to D=
But we are only human ;-;

In general I don't mind people asking if I'll trade. The annoyance for me comes when I say no and they get all offended and have a throw down tantrum. I've only had a couple of these. Most people just said ok and went on with their lives. I was never dealing in high end stuff though.
To the OP, what did you say to the guy? Did you tell him the issue? Maybe he won't be such a dummy next time. Sorry this happened to you :( If that had been me I would have ignored the second offer if I knew you already wrote the check. It's just being a decent person, you know?

Thx ^^
And nah the guy was a major ***hole about it :T
Kept saying how it was my fault for not getting to dunby on time while I was there from the beginning o.o
Bleh just someone l need to keep on my blacklist permanently =]
Hmm but yea I'm over it now, *** just happens and sometimes ya can't do anything about it so imma stop crying bout it and go on!
Still.........that bank fee hurt :T_T:

While not related to trading requests, still on topic due to it being an annoyance inflicted by another player:
Me: *standing at ovens, doing alchemy stuffs*
builderdude: hey cryo
Me: ?
builderdude: what r ur ranks of alchemy?
(if you're too lazy to actually spell out words like "are" and "your" then I'm too lazy to type anything at all) *ignores*
Builderdude: *persistantly keeps asking and bugging* hey cryo wut r u making?

Reminds me of when I was on my shop alt selling stuff for my friends.
Him: "Would you trade for the flashy dye?"
Me: "Depending on what it is, I might consider."
Him: -Shows Metal Lightning Wand-
Me: "Hm. That's about the same value. Unfortunately the dye isn't mine and the owner won't be back 'til a few days but.."
Him: "asdfghj I hate this game" -runs off before I can finish-
I was going to tell him I'd hold onto the dye for him until the owner got back buuuut whatever.
