Pranksters have been blamed for a stunt in Canada that saw a river dyed bright green.
The stunt, in a British Columbia beauty spot, turned the Goldstream River luminous green, reports Metro.
The cause was a mystery at first until tests revealed that somebody had added fluorescein to the water.
However, the culprits have still not been caught almost three weeks after the incident.
The colouring lasted several hours and no fish were harmed or coloured by the dye, which is commonly used as a tracer agent in water studies.
A study conducted at Environment Canada's Pacific Environmental Science Centre in North Vancouver confirmed the water was not toxic.
Hiker Tyson Elder recorded the strange sight and uploaded it on YouTube where it has attracted more than 900,000 hits.
He said: "We had been hiking all day so to see something so bright and unexpected was kind of unnerving, especially because it is a popular tourist destination.
"Everyone was shocked by what they saw, it was big news that day. No one seemed to know what was going on. It was quite an interesting day."
Fluorescein was previously used to dye the Chicago River green on St Patrick's Day but it was banned in 1962 and vegetable dye is now used.

I wonder if you turn green after you swim in it.
You'll probably have the same results smoking weed.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fluorescein
small amounts are used for optometry
but the cat thinks it only turns the water blue
not a person

Reminds me of what they did to the Chicago river for St. Patty's day.

I didn't expect that shade of green, haha.
That's pretty freaking bright. Even though they say it's not toxic, I still feel like I'd burn up the moment I stepped in it.

SO GREEN! :XD:
I doth love the color green. I wish I had seen that Green River.
If I was there I would be tempted to burst into song about a green river and next thing you know it would become a meme on the internet like Double Rainbow all the way!

It'd be frightening to see that, not knowing what was going on.
