So according to a few online sources, there are certain weapons that can and cannot be specially upgraded. For this case, I'm considering the Iron Mace and the Mace.

The Iron Mace does not have Special Upgrades, and a Specially Upgraded Mace can overpower the Iron Mace in terms of Max Damage.

Mace: 94 Max Damage (monster drop/upgraded/Artisan/Special)
Iron Mace: 85 Max Damage (Smithed/monster drop/upgraded)

However, should I use R type or S type Special Upgrades?

If I use R type, the maximum damage will drop 13 (which is lower than Iron Mace). However, if I choose to do so, I'd upgrade the Mace focusing on both Critical and Max Damage (thus having a higher critical chance to do higher critical with R type upgrades).

S type is pretty self explanatory; having higher damage consistently than the Iron Mace.

The break-even point for one-handed axes is 316 max damage before S/R while the break-even point for one-handed blunts/swords is 331 before S/R.

Yes. Skill multipliers are irrelevant.

Rank 1 critical and 30% chance is assumed.

I thought one needed 184~185 max damage for lvl 6 R-type upgrade for one-handed blunts to equal lvl 6 S-type upgrade for one-handed blunts.

As in:

Assuming x is the break-even max dmg point...

Max damage from lvl 6 S-type upgrade for one-handed blunts (+31 max dmg) = Max damage from lvl 6 R-type upgrade for one-handed blunts (+42% Critical damage)

(x + 31) + (x + 31) * 1.5 = x + x * 1.92

x + 31 + 1.5x + 46.5 = x + 1.92x

2.5x + 77.5 = 2.92x

77.5=.42x

x = 184.524

Not going to bother with the one-handed axes since I'm assuming the same error.

185 damage? That's pretty reachable! That's also assuming that I have enough critical chance to effectively WM/smash/normal attack with, right?

Actually, I was calculating max damage, not average damage. Thus, Critical rate wasn't included.

If average damage is what you want, it's a different story. Average dmg between the two types of upgrade are nearly doubled the amount of damage needed, compared to just calculating max dmg only. This is assuming 0 min dmg.
