Not sure if this should go here or in the Library. If a mod thinks it should be moved, feel free to do so.
So, this may not seem like a serious thread, but it is. This is something I've wondered about ever since I was in Elementary school. See, when I was in Elementary, I had this friend named Tori. We were really good friends and would sleep over and such. We pretty much spent all of our time together. Well, she's the one who really got we into Anime/Manga, and she liked to Roleplay and pretend she was her favorite Anime/Manga character at the time, and sometimes I would play along.
Well, she never stopped. Even when the games were over, she'd continue to be that character. All the time. When she did everything. Even when she was all alone, she'd say that she was that character. I always thought it was the weirdest thing. Like, "Can you just... not be yourself? Don't you get tired of it?"
Eventually we stopped being friends as we grew older and went to different schools. Her name came up a few months ago at school, and I had asked about her and how she was doing. Turns out, she's still the same way she's always been. It doesn't surprise me, but really... it's just... weird.
So, do any of you know anyone who does things like this? And what are your opinions on it? Do you think it's a mental thing, where she was/is so unhappy with herself that she just had/has to be someone else all the time?
Tl;dr some people pretend to be someone else all the time. What are your thoughts on it?

I think thats really wired. Its cool to be an active roleplayer but I'm willing to bet she did it so much she now believes it.

Me and my friends use to do this when I was younger. We would like watch DBZ and I'd be like, "I'm Goku!" and my friends would do the same, but that was when we were younger. I don't know anyone who does that now o_o. I don't think people do it because they are unsatisfied with themselves, but do it because anime characters/video game characters tend to do the impossible. It's like boring human..or energy shooting, flying, invincible, kick a** hero lol.

This is what I was thinking. It is pretty sad though. I'm looking forward to the input from everyone else~

Who does she RP as?

Maybe the personality of the character she is RP is her "true" self that she likes to be?

Real life RPing, by herself? (No group LARPING) No, that's just plain weird, she couldeven have some mental disorder of sorts.

Her favorite anime/manga characters when we were younger. It was usually things like Ranma 1/2 or Inuyasha. .//hack, things like that. No idea what she's up to now, and since I don't go to school like I used to, I don't really have the ability to find out what's going on.

We used to do it together when we were kids, but for like, an hour at most at a time. Fun kid things we would do at school to look "cool." But no, she does it by herself, when nobody else is around, all the time.

Maybe... I just don't understand. Wouldn't you get tired of being someone else all the time? It really makes me wonder how she feels about her
real self.

that is kinda bizarre o_o to me, people that roleplay are unhappy with themselves and use it as an escape
(that's just what i think though, if there are some RPers in here that RP for different reasons, please state why)
i did it myself at age 13 for a few months, around the time i was socially isolated from my peers at school so i began frequenting my favorite forum even more
my friends RP'd so i joined in too but got bored of it
now i dislike RPing altogether, but to me cosplay is entirely different. it's merely dressing up to me, while RPing is taking on a persona and is just weird e__e

She definitely has some sort of mental issue, or she just hates who she is so much that she never wants to be her.

Roleplaying in real life?
..Does it count if it's during foreplay? LOL.
I like to keep roleplaying to online, imo. Or foreplay.
Otherwise it's a tad weird.

In my opinion during these day and ages it's nice to see someone who is like that. Heck I haven't even met a person in my school yet who has yet besides watched Naruto or Bleach. They seems to deny that they're are any other animes/mangas.
But I digress that I think it's cool but in your friend's case I would of kind of felt scared for you ya know. Like being someone else and you want to be yourself but she can't help herself to get herself.

Roleplaying in RL all the time? That's a bit odd...I mean I use to do that as a kid all the time. But that was as a kid. I still RP but it's online. So your old friend has some issue she needs to work out.

I used to do that, especially when I was younger. I think it's really weird that she does it by herself, unless it's not really just role-play and that's how she actually is. Still, it feels strange to me that someone would want to do that all the time.
