so I started having this problem when I installed MSN, is that occasionally an icon that looked like a old-fashioned telephone ringing would pop up on my toolbar. I don't know what it is or why it pops up, but it completely cripples the sound on my computer. as in, it sounds tinny and like crap.
sometimes right-clicking the icon makes it go away, other times the icon just vanishes and my sound is still crap. it doesn't pop up often [once every month], but it just popped up when I opened settings in Steam, and again when I loaded fraps
so, what the hell is this program thing, and how can I get rid of it? maybe not uninstall it, but I can't even figure out what process it goes under. it doesn't seem to be a virus or malicious, but the only way I can fix my sound is by restarting, which is a pain in the ass
techy people halp me pl0x

Try using a system restore to a point before you got that.

whoa, that would be like...a year ago, when I got this q_q
it's definitely not malicious, I had originally thought it might have something to do with windows live call...it's just weird.

I would say either (or both) uninstall MSN and see if that solves it, or go to your Control Panel and uninstall anything that seems unnecessary or mysterious.
...
What does the icon look like?

Actually, I just found out the name: Close Speaker Phone Companion. The icon is a small, black telephone [the one with the dial and all, y'know], that rings.
I also found a solution, it seems to be working for now. So this thread can be closed.
and oddly enough it's a problem that's exclusive to my line of HP Mini. hmm.

it actually isn't, but I don't know where it came from. I found some options in the control panel that had to do with noise cancellation, so I disabled those.

I googled it...... maybe helpful:
Ok. this icon is not a malware, or virus. It's an option you made playng with your sound card.
My sound card is a SoundMax. And detects when an aplication is using the microphone.
Here is what you have to do:
If you have SoundMax integrated soundcard, open the soundmax control panel. (you will find it in control panel, or the system tray. like a blue icon, with "play" symbol on it"
- Open the preferences and go to the microphone tab.
At the Microphone enhancements chose No filtering.(the problem it's solved) And at the Mirophone setup -> soundmax superbeam.(Not really necesarlly, but i guess is a good option).
Now your soundcard, will not filter the microphone when a program uses it.
If you have a different soundcard, try to find the filtering options in the soundcard menu.
and...
fixed it!
ok: I went into control panel on the start menu
on the left hand side, I went to other control panel options - I clicked on a thing called ' andrea noise cancellation idt', and unticked the two boxes therein.
Sounds like if you did the 2nd one you probably fixed it though.
