  I don't believe that "born with it" bull****. I don't believe that for homosexuality either. I suppose some people may be born like that, but I wouldn't call it a disorder. But, a lot probably develop it at some point throughout their life.

  homosexuality isn't a disorder, but it was considered one about 20 years ago. things that are true sexual identity disorders are those where you're unhappy with your body or your identity to the point where you can't function normally unless you get treatment of some sort.

  We have to wonder why the basic form of the fetus is that of a female... Why is the chromosome Y missing a part, is it an anomaly? Should it actually be an X chromosome? Are males an anomaly or the evolution of females?

  it's strange you contradicted yourself in the same paragraph, saying how there is no maybe when it comes to what is expressed genetically (eye colour) as well as saying its biological, but at the same time deny any influence of genetics on your sexual preference...
  
  I don't know about you, but I am a result of my environment's demands on my genetics. A complex soup of predispositions with expressed as well as suppressed traits. One does not exist without the other.
  
  and you shouldn't take it personally what the DSM-IV-TR considers to be a disorder, be it Depression or SID (homosexuality is not a disorder). It's simply there to help people correctly and reliably diagnose and solve people's problems when they know they can't be happy unless there is a change in their physical or mental makeup.
  
  here's the actual criteria if anyone is curious...
  

  In the United States, the American Psychiatric Association permits a diagnosis of gender identity disorder if the four diagnostic criteria in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4thEdition, Text-Revised (DSM-IV-TR) are met. The criteria are:
  
  * Long-standing and strong identification with another gender
  
  * Long-standing disquiet about the sex assigned or a sense of incongruity in the gender-assigned role of that sex
  
  * The diagnosis is not made if the individual also has physical intersex characteristics.
  
  * Significant clinical discomfort or impairment at work, social situations, or other important life areas.
  
  If the four criteria are met under the DSM-IV-TR, a diagnosis is made under ICD-9 code 302.85. See the classification and external resources sidebar at right for other diagnostic codes for gender identity disorder.
  
  The International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) list three diagnostic criteria:
  
  Transsexualism (F64.0) has three criteria:[4]
  
  1. The desire to live and be accepted as a member of the opposite sex, usually accompanied by the wish to make his or her body as congruent as possible with the preferred sex through surgery and hormone treatment
  2. The transsexual identity has been present persistently for at least two years
  3. The disorder is not a symptom of another mental disorder or a chromosomal abnormality

  if there is no personal distress, and the person is able to carry on with their life, then it isn't considered abnormal.. i mentioned this in an earlier post.

  and yea, psychologists have been revising so called sexual disorders for years. I believe homosexuality was considered a disorder before because there was much stigma surrounding being one, to the point where if you did tell the truth about your sexuality then there were severe retributions. You could be fired from your job, be rejected from your family, etc.. that alone is criteria enough for people to think it was a 'disorder'. However it wasn't true.
  They needed no change in themselves, they did not harm themselves or others.. it was just against the bible and a bunch of other social things that eventually people got over, so they are accepted now as the norm for the most part. It was never a problem to begin with, and thus the label disorder was removed. You don't need to treat happy people! their distress and impairment were simply rooted in society.
  
  as for why wanting to be the other sex is one, I believe it is because of the fact that it requires some severe intervention, with some life-long changes. Surgery is currently irreversible, and you do handicap yourself sexually as a result since the changes are only skin deep (aside from hormones, but it still doesn't make you fertile). There are also some side effects to hormone treatment.
  there is also the consideration that people with SID often will suffer from depression when seeking treatment, but once again is often because of societal reasons.
  
  There is very little empirical evidence that any of these diagnoses are problematic to people themselves, let alone be considered a mental disorder. They're mainly considered such because being a deviation from the norm tends to cause environmental distress. Maybe far in the future it won't even be considered one anymore. I know transvestitism really shouldn't be one, there's lots of controversy around it already.

  well, something like that was used as an example for my abnormal psychology class.. (highlight next section since it's kinda gross)
  there was a janitor who would intentionally make the toilets not be able to flush, and would take the feces after someone went, take it home in a bag, and play with it while masturbating. Neither his wife or anyone else knew about it, and it didn't harm anyone, nor gave him any personal distress.
  so would that be considered a disorder? It wouldn't considering the diagnostic critera for a wierd fetish (or paraphilia) is a need for it to cause significant psychosocial distress for the person and/or have detrimental effects on important areas of their life.
  
  that's pretty much the only difference. They don't use norms to determine whether you have a disorder, only how much distress it causes you or others.
  
  thats why the DSM is always being revised, since society's values are dynamic.

  My teacher knew a woman who thought of herself as a man, and was also in love with men. So she was a "woman" but she didn't feel like she was straight, because she felt like she should have been born a man herself.
  
  Personally, I don't care what people think they are and who they like, as long as their lifestyle isn't causing direct harm to someone else. I say direct people some people have issues with tolerance, and to me, that doesn't count.
