Sony is widely expected to formally unveil the PlayStation Portable 2 later this week, but ahead of this a major Japanese newspaper has spilled the beans on some of the new handheld's specs and capabilities.
According to a report on Nikkei, the portable will in Japan be able to link up with the NTT DoCoMo network via a 3G phone connection. While this particular network deal obviously won't apply to Western consumers, the fact there's apparently 3G connectivity in the unit means we could expect something similar when the handheld launches in the West.
A 3G connection would mean the PSP could download data (and movies, and music) over a phone network, greatly increasing the connectivity of the unit. Despite not mentioning this specifically in the report, it would also open up the possibility of it functioning as a phone, despite the expected reveal this year of a dedicated PlayStation Phone as well.
The other major, previously unknown piece of information in the report is that the PSP2 is expected to boast an OLED screen, which on a handheld this size would be capable of producing amazing visuals.

It won't work in the U.S.
the phone companies in the U.S. are terrible
anyways, whats with the size of this handheld!?

What the... I didn't even know Sony was planning to release a PSP2... Is it still going to use UMDs, or are they going to go with full downloadable games like they tried with PSP Go? It actually looks pretty sleek, and the inclusion of a 2nd analog stick is really something that PSP needed right from the get-go. Some games can be a real pain to play with only 1 stick... (Peace Walker for instance...)
On the 3G, I'm personally not that interested. I really don't need my portable systems functioning as a phone also. I guess some people are into that though.

I saw a form of this before. I saw it as an android phone with the analog sticks like this instead of a keyboard, with android 2.3 (Gingerbread) on it.
What I saw was a sneak peek of it. I'll try to find it again.
EDIT:

An older form of it, yes.

Is that a real picture of it or is it a mock up? Also Andy, the PSP2 and the PSPhone are different devices.

Won't it be weird to use the two analog sticks?
A lot of PSP owners might not get this, so games will prob have more than one control scheme
I don't see an L and R button, and if there is one there it must be awkward to use it with analog(for FPS or 3PS).

Is this even the actual picture?
Kotaku used another PSP2 picture in their article and said that the picture in the article was not the confirmed PSP2 and I feel like I've seen this before. o-o

If they switch to full downloadable, then I'm not going to get one.
I've gone through too many PSPs, and I'm not sure if I'll have to rebuy everything if mine breaks. Seems too shifty.

Ideally they'd do what Valve did and make a Steam-type service that doesn't go out of it's way to screw you over, but then again this is Sony we're talking about. Customer respect is pretty much the last thing on their minds.
Also I doubt we'll see the final version of this thing until twelve months AFTER it comes out, also going by their track record over the years.
That said, the idea of it being download-only isn't so bad if it starts that way. The PSPGo was idiotic because they expected people to re-buy a system they already had, but this time it can't play most, if not ANY, of the games you already own! Just going all download from the get-go would skip that whole hassle and just be appealing.
