if you time it so you're airborne when the fireball clashes with the ground?

I don't think so, since it's a huge explosion o -o

Well anything's possible when you can throw a paper airplane to evade a fireball xD

Nope. As long as you are within the range of the Fireball's Blast upon Landing or while in the air, you will be hit.
Just like if you were using it in a duel.
(Though if it doesn't kill you or deadly you, you will be able to get up immediately, sometimes.)

Mabinogi does not track a Z axis.
Just as you can windmill airborne hobgoblins, you can be hit while airborne by fireball.
Just ask this: Can you use Play dead to evade any attack? (the answer is no.)

*Unless flying or using hot air balloons.

Actually, even then, only your avatar is tracked. If you aggro a wyvern, flying up or down any distance, even an infinite one, won't protect you from being hit, as long as you're within horizontal range.

Additionally evasion is used to evade arrows and bolt attacks. It says this in the description. :) It doesn't evade IS, FB or thunder to my knowledge (Yes it can evade the FIRST strike if thunder because the first strike is a bolt, once hit with said bolt you cannot evade the thunder from the sky)

You can't smash somebody on a balloon, from the ground.
Keeping that in mind, Mabinogi has a kind of Z-Axis, but in a way that there are only two vales. Ground, and Airborne.
Animations don't count as airborne. Which is what most things are.
... Ignoring the fact that Fireball are explosions not earthquakes, and still actually have some height.
