Upgrade stones!

  Thats what I thought, I have not done it, but after reading such things as
  

  To upgrade you need to use one Red Upgrade Stone or Blue Upgrade Stone.
  If you upgrade with The Red Upgrade Stone, the weapon will become an R type. Using the Blue Upgrade Stone will cause it to become an S type

  
  I thought it meant, like, use a red stone, you get 1R, then the next time you do it, you can use one or the other, and get either 2R or 2S, I thought they were all stacking independent events....Not sure though.

  Well, anyway, there is always that switch thing, so theoretically, spending a lot of gold, you could do something similar....
