Wait I don't get it do you do your artisan upgrade when your weapon is 5-5 or for the Fifth upgrade so Artisan Upgrade when it's 4-5 so it goes to 5-5?
And for the Battle Sword the Blue or Red upgrade stone?
@edit: Can you wear an Ankh and a Ring?

Ugh. So many people who don't know what they are talking about trying to answer things. I can't beleive this has gotten to two pages without a clear answer.
Normal upgrades:
Weapons can have 5 normal upgrades. These upgrades are labeled as 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 for a total of 5 possible upgrades. If a particular upgrade can be put in at more than one place then it is labeled as "earliest posssible upgrade ~ last possible upgrade" so if something can only be your first uptade, it is 0~0. If it can be your first or second upgrade, it would be labeled as 0~1. If it can only be your last normal upgrade it is listed as 4~4.
An artisan upgrade is a normal upgrade. It is always 100 prof, 20k gold, and 4~4.
Gem Upgrades:
Weapons can have one gem upgrade. This upgrade can only be applied to a weapon that has all 5 normal upgrades in place. It costs proficiency, gold, and some gems. What gem upgrades are available differs from weapon to weapon just like normal upgrades, but there tends to be far fewer options.
Special upgrades:
Also sometimes referred to by players as overgrades. These upgrades do not use proficiency, and instead use a completely new system. However they can only be applied to certain weapons, and only after those weapons have a gem upgrade. Overgrades personalize your weapon, and boost durability by one point, as well as add to the offensive capabilities of the weapon. These upgrades require red or blue upgrade stones.
I still don't get why people keep getting Special upgrades and Artisan upgrades mixed up. I blame it on the fact that people have gotten to used to not caring what words mean, and have stopped paying as close attention to what words are actually used by other people.

Ok my tiny brain still doesn't understand can someone just tell what what upgrade do I got to get it to? I can buy a weapon that is Artisan Upgradeable Prof it to 100 in 30 minutes Have 20k in the bank and take it out then magically get a Blue/Red Upgrade stone and Magically make (Insert cheap but good upgrade cost x 5 or 4 (IdunnoI'masking) = :what: GP.
What I just want to know Do you do 4 or 5 upgrades on a weapon that has 5 upgrade slots. Is the Artisan Upgrade The Fifth and Final Upgrade or do I already have to have the fifth and final upgrade on the weapon and the artisan being like a magical 6/5 or w/e?

You do normal upgrades first. Then you do a gem upgrade. Then you do a special upgrade.
An artisan upgrade is a normal upgrade. It has to be the 5th -normal- upgrade.
A special upgrade is the one that uses the upgrade stones and the new anvil/fountain looking things.

Steps to artisan:
1. Get first upgrade
2. Get second upgrade
3. Get third upgrade
4. Get fourth upgrade
5. Get artisan upgrade
Weapon is now at 5/5 upgrades
6. Get gem upgrade
Weapon is now qualified for overupgrades
Steps to kill inventory:
7. Get upgrade stones and go to anvil in town
8. Get less inventory space

Artisan upgrades are not special upgrades. I will say it a third time. Artisan upgrade is a -normal- upgrade.
special upgrades are something completely different, and those are the ones that use the upgrade stones.
You are mixing up two completely different things.
Step 1: get a weapon with 4 normal upgrades. On the equipment view it will look like 4/5 upgrades are done. Get 100 prof. Get 20k. Insert artisan upgrade at an npc just like any other normal upgrade. Once completed your weapon will show 5/5 upgrades.
Step 2: get a gem upgrade. Once completed your weapon will show 5/5 upgrades and below that it will show new text saying gem upgrade.
Step 3: Get a red or blue upgrade stone. Take your gem upgraded weapon and that stone to the anvil thing. Congrats you now have lvl 1 special upgrade and some special stuff happens with your weapon. You can try to get your special upgrade to level 3 at max at this point.
