  I dunno...according to the wand the OP had in his first post, the upgrades on his and Zyrus' wand are pretty much identical (excluding the final upgrade). Doesn't look like MP reduction-oriented to me.
  
  In any case, I think you might be misinterpreting what the OP meant when he considered getting an "average" wand. To me, it sounds like just buying another wand from the shop to re-prof, then get the artisan upgrade at the end. And according to that other post he made...it sounds like that's what he did.

  Yes. that's what I have done with all of the crystal wands I have owned/sold.
  
  Edit: 500+ int though, I did the Restratint upgrade 1 first and then the crystal upgrade that takes mana consumption down again. 12% damage reduction is nothing for me, personally.
