“otaku" is offensive in japan and to japanese people if used casually. It may mean anime fan here, but has the almost same meaning as "japanese basement dweller" in japan.

That's what it originally meant but it's a lot more loosely used nowadays, similar to the way we use it. I asked a few Japanese people about it and that's what they said at least.
I'm frankly surprised that friends are 1% away from anime. o_0
