Long divison

  Actually, now that I think about it, that doesn't make sense. People have to learn how to sign their names, so why wouldn't they teach cursive?

  and I write some sort of hybrid cursive to write notes, it comes naturally to me (I blame my mother, it looks exactly like hers)

  I read a fictional excerpt once that took place in the far future, where life itself is automated by devices and people were retarded as hell.
  
  They couldn't multiply, or even add at that. They all just used calculators.
  
  One "genius" man one day gathers people and show them the power of a "paper calculator", which was just him writing down numbers to do multiplication. People were shocked to see him be able to do 3 times 7 without a calculator. He told them that "our ancestors used to be able to even do something like long division in their heads" and people were blown away.
  
  I thought we had a bit more time before people stopped knowing how to do basic 4 function math.
  
  Edit: cursive needs to die and disappear. Its a practice that is no longer used anywhere except for elementary school and pharmacy school (because you'll need to read doctor's notes, and those bastards will not write anything unless they get to keep their pen glued to the paper through the entire writing)

  I'm pretty surprised about this though. Being able to do basic math like this by hand is just something I'd think everyone should know.

  Yes. I use it a lot. I try to do a lot of mathematics without calculators, since I believe it keeps my number-crunching part of my brain sharp.
  
  My classmates learned about it in 3rd grade, but my parents taught it to me (and long multiplication) when I reached 1st grade.
  
  It's usually why I don't stress out as much when I'm doing math/science exams that don't allow calculators.
  
  Try doing the SAT Math section without any calculator for starters~

  You'd be surprised at the general life benefits of not using a calculator for 4 function math is.
  Eventually you'll get fast enough to outspeed a calculator anyways.
  
  You can also learn tricks to doing large number calculations in your head. They're not hard, and I can easily multiply most numbers no matter what the digit, and can divide by any large number by up to two digits in less than 10 seconds.
  
  I'm no good at working with more than 3 different individual numbers themselves though. Haven't had any practice with that.
  
  Anyways, it improves your ability to think, it speeds your thoughts up, it helps you handle stress better, it helps you be more creative, and it helps your memories.

  I know how to do long division. I do something like it but skip the subtraction part and just use reasoning the entire time to get my answer. I surprisingly rarely get it wrong unless I'm dividing a number in the thousands with a single digit number that isn't 2. I'm too lazy to use calculators anyway.

  The third elementary school I went to used this. I thought it was a new high tech, innovative way of multiplication since the school was the first school I went to that wasn't dirt poor and had 'smart boards' and 'whiteboards' instead of 'chalkboards' and 'projectors'.
  
  I tried to do it and failed miserably. The traditional style was so much easier to do imo, and nobody in the school knew how to do it aside from the teachers and thought it was way too hard to do.
  
  Skip forward a year to middle school. Majority of the people that learned the lattice method had horrible math grades in 6th grade. Skip to 8th grade, and I find out from my math teacher that he's really pissed that the students were taught the lattice method because it's horrible and prone to error (apparently). I lol'd.
