(no idea where to put this)
this only sorta applies to those that are shy irl at one point or another
anyone here started to become more social (irl), because of their experiences online?
I sorta thought about this when I read that G.I.R.L. gamers thread in Mabinogi Talk
edit: if not more social, less shy? (cause I guess more social really wasn't what I was going for xD)

I haven't become more social, but I have more things to talk about, I suppose.

The only reason you are more open online is because you are under the online
disinhibition effect. It does not help at all with your social skills because speech uses a different part of the brain than thinking and writing (typing). If you wish to be more extrovert you must:
Accept that extroverts are normal. Accept that introverts are normal.
Start by thinking that talking to strangers will benefit you in some way, even if it is really indirect.
Get the direct confidence (not relying on physical appearance) to talk to strangers in real life.
Practice more. Practice with friends (no need to tell them if you don't want to). Join group activities involving people you do not know.
If you are too shy, you will soon realize it will take away many opportunities as you go through adulthood.

if it makes a difference, instead of more social,
less shy in general?

Mmmm... I became a bit more social, cuz I started to care less about the people around me, thinking 'They're just trolls...one way or another' for the people that disliked me. With that carelessness coming along, I started to socialize a bit more, and people were drawn to my way of being, I suppose xD So it did make me a bit more social than I used to be, in my 'Awkward teen' phase, where you cared mostly about looks and the people around you.

I think its made me more social in real life. Back then, if you were not my teacher or family, all you would get from me is a Nod. It would take an army to make me talk.
Now... I can talk easily BUT only if you're a real close friend XD
Like this right now, I can easily type all these words and not feel shy ONE BIT... but in real life... All you'd get is a blank stare if you asked me :]
I don't care what people think in real life nor in MMO's, I just let them be and not talk to them... but... yea, Gaming has improved my socail-ness by a bit :P

You care to much about what people think of you. If you care too much about what they think, you aren't really doing what you want, you just want them to think well of you, even if your not being who you really are.
Need to get to the point where you believe in what you believe. Care about your opinions about yourself, not others opinion on you.
So you dress this way, talk this way, act this way, that's who you are. If your hiding that, then your just hiding yourself.

Actually I think online games made me less social. When I was a kid I use to play outside all the time and had lot's of friends, now sometimes I don't even feel like talking to them and all...

If I don't like you I wont talk to you irl and in-game. I have a bunch of friends of varying cliques (I guess you could say xDDD) I became more social through being in Theater and having fun and just letting loose.

it might make you more apathetic and bored...
if that's what you mean
I guess being apathetic about real life could make you less shy, but you wouldn't talk any more than before, especially to people who do not share the same interests.

well actually now I do kinda see where some people are comming from,
talking online and etc doesn't necessarily make people more social or less shy cause they're just in front of a computer, and won't get much exposure otherwise,
then there's me I can be very social sometimes- but only if I'm in the mood to (I used to be very shy, and now it all really depends on my mood)
I asked partly because some people might become less shy, from the experience of knowing how people are online, and that is communication anyways, and that could in turn help improve social skills
and I tend to do this alot- but by the end of this post I can't tell if it made any sense xD

I act the same way I would in real life if I was talking to my friends or just in general it's just under different circumstances i.e. in a fantasy world where you can die and come back alive etc etc. .
I'm caffeinated-hyper spazz who does stupid crap for laughs and can spit fire. (make jokes) I take very little people seriously online and even on forums, cause I just have a chillax attitude and could care less. If your an ass online, cool story I don't care and just ignore you. Though I can get worked up during FPS games or while playing S4L. SO SERIOUS! Dx!!!!

I don't get as angry when things don't go my way, and I'm a little better at stating my point in arguments than I was before the intarwebz.

I've always been social in real life. The internets has just provided me more topics and references to yell out randomly.

I only became more social because people in game commented on my personality...
I don't know it gave me confidence to be like that IRL and idk but yeah...
