Depression =/= sad
Depressed people will still look like normal people from the outside. They will still laugh and smile at your jokes and try to listen to what you say, so it is pretty hard to spot a person with depression.
while the sadness, crying spells are the most noticeable symptoms, it is not the most debilitating...
almost all nerve impulses (emotion, memory recall, speech, hearing, sight, motor functions) also become imbalanced and steadily slower (the change is barely noticeable) throughout the years until you realize you are a snail running through molasses while normal people are passing you outside. this will in turn lead to a lack of motivation/will to do anything at all, even daily routines.
the imbalance may also cause acute panic attacks and high anxiety and cause you to loose sleep and focus
and before you know it, all those years that passed by will be a void.
and that's just a few out of the many symptoms.
so yes, it's as bad as any other mental illness if left untreated and can last decades. if ever are unfortunate enough to get this, don't let ignorant people tell you to suck it up and get treatment asap.

I dislike people who self-diagnose themselves with depression, and use it as an excuse to be down all the time.
If you think you have depression, get it checked.
And I really dislike people who think getting out of depression is simple, or claim depression is just an excuse to be sad all the time.

This is the worst part of depression IMO.

Eh, it's almost Valentine's. People are going to be self-diagnosing themselves all over the place.

Already knew that. I myself have suffered from depression since I was.. 10? It developed a horrible chemical imbalance in my brain which I still have, despite being on anti-depressants for about 2 years now.
That sad thing is, people will always think they have depression when they're more sad than usual. I used to get mad about it, but these days I just kind of sigh and go on with my life, lol.
Most people who claim depression don't even know the edge of the meaning of true depression. A lot of these people are just very over emotional and therefore assume 'omgah i'm liek reallty sad i myst have depression ))):"
My depression used to make me feel like a robot.. just kind of doing things because I need to, but I never felt any emotions but sadness. I still kind of have it, but mm.. that's for a different reason.
Ah, well, though~ that's stupid people in life for ya'.

This. So many times.
When I was "depressed" from constant family and school problems, I knew I was sad, but I knew that it wasn't depression.
People just use "Depression" and "Very sad" interchangably

unfortunately, truly depressed people are only seen as depressed after they attempt suicide, and only if it fails could they be rushed to get treatment. often families have no idea until then.
that's how it was for my brother.
I've had people with major depressive disorder come to class and talk to us about their lives. It makes me feel so hopeless to think that people can be imprisoned by their mentalities like that, but i'm glad that with proper medication that they could at least feel normal for once in their lives.

People always ask me if I'm depressed!!
I can never answer them, because IDK.
I'm probably not though, only weird thing that happens to me is, sometimes I don't know if I'm dreaming or not, because of how slow and ... desensitized/numb I feel.

the most important part about diagnosing depression is your feeling of
hopelessness. without it, a clinician cannot diagnose for depression. it could be something else.
if this impenetrable feeling of hopelessness encompasses nearly every part of your daily activities, then it is very possible.
(hooray armchair psychology.)

If you only knew how much medication I take a day for mental disorders.
anxiety
chronic depression
bipolar disorder/mild schizo
adhd
and 2 others I rather not discuss.
do I have these mental disorders?
I don't believe I have ****, I got these "diagnosed" when I a very stupid decision.
well, let me put it this way.
I don't believe in mental disorders, I just think it's them try to put a name on every little ****ing thing and making you shove pills down your throat for $$$
they have a medical disorder for everything now
example :
I loveeee crunch berries and I tell my therapist (which I have to see twice a week)
my love for them
she has me see the guy who prescribes my medication (not my normal doctor but my coocoo doctor)
and he diagnoses me with supermegascrazyberry syndrome and prescribes me a horse pill that I'll have to crush and put in yogurt daily so I can live in society without suffering from supermegacrazyberry syndrome.
I'm not saying anyone who has "mental disorders" (including myself) is faking it, I'm just saying it's how they make their money.

Does medication prescribed for mental illness actually work? I've heard somewhere that they have no real proof that they'll significantly help, but since I have no experience on the subject I have no idea.

For some people only certain medications work.
I've gone through a range of medications and only 2 have worked (one I broke out very bad, though it boosted my mood amazingly)
