I have a human character that I use mostly melee on and I was wondering what the best ego weapon for melee characters is. I'm thinking about getting a 2H, Dustin Silver Knight Sword, or Gladius. I'm also willing to consider getting an ego bow because I used to be ranged but switched to melee because I was struggling since I'm too lazy to get AR.

Muramasa.

Dustin Silver Knight Sword would be the best long term ego Two Hander. For Range, I think Ring Bow. Those are both for long term.

Thanks for the advice, but do you mind sharing your reasons for the suggestions? I could just look at the stat growth for different weapons on the wiki but I'm interested in hearing arguments for critical vs. max damage or balance vs. minimum damage, etc.

Muramasa gets more max damage than a gladius, with around the same crit rate at~50. Bastard Sword, does have more damage than a muramasa, but it really lacks crit. The down side or muramasa, however, is that you'll probably end up doing nx repairs. On the other hand, gladius/bastard sword repairs are more accessible. As far as I know, you will be able to dual wield your ego muramasa with the sword of elsinore, which stands at 50% critical rate. You can maximize your chances of critical/damage with a muramasa.
For ring bows, I am not too sure. It gets the most damage out of the other ego-able bows. Since the release of crash shot, it isn't too important for high-crit rate for regular dungeoning/shadow missions.

I'd say a Bastard Sword is better if you plan on using WM more often than you use smash, but I'd grab a Muramasa if you smash even a bit more than you use WM, since the crit % gap is pretty big.

I think wing bows are better than ring bows.

Ring bows are practically higher max damage at lower ego str levels, and if you want a white color Ring Bow ego as well, then do so.
Wing bow has way more range, and the bright flourescent red is one of the event colors. It also has a extremely fast shooting speed as well.

Ego dagger. Because it only takes up two spaces of inventory, and you can still get free blessings, healing, mp restore, hunger abatement, and so on from it.
Actually using an ego for combat is stupid. The cost a ton of money to feed/repair, and even the best of egos mentioned in this thread only barely outperform enchanted and upgraded weaponry. You will spend far less money getting a well enchanted and upgraded weapon regardless of what kind of ego you might consider instead.
The dagger is just a one time, fairly cheap expense. Equip it only ever to talk to it once/game day if you need blessings or healing, then quickly unequip it. Only ever feed it small green gems or pet instructor sticks if it ever drops below happy, which should be very rarely. you should never have to repair it either. It will over time actually save you money on holy water, and pay for itself.

I was quite suprised when you mentioned an ego dagger at first since I was thinking more along the lines of combat rather than other uses and an ego dagger is vastly inferior to other ego swords. I do part time jobs for HW so I wouldn't really be saving money from that... but healing, and MP restoring and all that does sound nice. What are the specifics of an ego's ability to heal and restore MP? Can they do it whenever you want or is there a cooldown or something?

When you talk to your ego, and it is happy enough, it will once per game day give a random effect, which may or may not be relevant. It can restore your hunger to full, heal your wounds/hp, or refill your mana even if those don't need it. It can bless one random item, or all your items. I don't recall any other effects.
And you apparently didn't read why I said to ego a dagger. Ego swords are vastly inferior to enchanted upgraded one. There is no point to getting a better ego, you may as well get the cheapest and most compact one.
And yes it will save you money over time even if you do jobs for your own hw. Just because you get them yourself doesn't mean they cost you nothing.

I did read what you said. The only way I can see ego swords being inferior to upgraded and enchanted swords is in their cost efficiency.

1. There's a very strong chance that DevCat will buff spirit weapons in the next update. What sort of improvement that may be, nobody knows. It could affect the standing of certain spirit weapon variants...it may even lessen the burden of feeding a spirit weapon. It's a good idea to wait.
2. Upgraded/enchanted weapons usually aren't superior to a maxed out spirit weapon, unless of course you're referring to the ease of obtaining a powerful vanilla weapon compared to the resources devoured by a spirit weapon. Spirit bows typically have improved range, which is something that strong upgraded weapons tend to lack.
It's not a bad idea to ego a dagger. After all, it's a free daily blessing and the cost of ego'ing a weapon is pathetic compared to the millions required to improve its stats. If you eventually decide to create a decent spirit weapon you can just kill the dagger and form a new spirit contract.
If you're looking to form a contract with a powerful spirit weapon,
Muramasa (Runner-ups: Bastard Sword, Gladius)
*Dustin Silver Knight Sword (Runner-ups: Masamune)
Wing Bow/Ring Bow (Runner-ups: Leather Long Bow, Crossbow)
*Fire Wand
*Broad Axe (Runner-ups: Battle Hammer)
Iron Mace
*Not recommended as its maxed stats are comparable or worse than its upgraded/enchanted equivalent.

2h egos really need to be buffed, it seems. And even the runner up needs NX repairs =/
