Then why don't you define what their goal is? In the end, they are all linked. Why would someone need to pay attention to silly bacteria or global warming if they have no effects on human activity and life? How does the extraction of raw materials for such and such product affect the climate and reserves of other materials? I know I'm stretching this a little, but the consequences of our actions are pondered every day by the scientific community. That way, we will know what to focus our time and resources on.
I don't really agree with the "most inventions" part. Just because some important inventions and formulas were made by accident doesn't mean that all of them were. A lot of them just build upon their predecessors.
