SEOUL, Feb. 15 (Yonhap) -- A 51-year-old man was caught 12 years after apparently killing his wife and storing her body in a box at his daughter's home, police officials said Tuesday.
The 20-year-old daughter alerted the police on Saturday after finding a dead woman's body inside a 1-meter-high cardboard box wrapped in 10 layers of vinyl at her home in Seoul's Yongsan ward, they said. Fingerprints have shown the body was that of her mother, identified only by her last name Yoon, they added.
The suspect, identified only by his last name Lee, was found in Bucheon in the southwest outskirts of the capital and is being investigated for charges of murder and corpse abandonment, police said.
Responding to reporters' questions, Lee said he and his wife, had "argued about moving homes" and had "disagreements."
"I kept the body because I was sorry to my dead wife and daughter. I wanted to keep the body forever," he said.
Lee is suspected of stabbing his wife, who was 39 at the time, at their home in June 1999 while quarreling about moving to a new home, police said. He is suspected of then placing the body in a box, wrapping it, and moving it along with everything else to his new home in Yongsan, where his daughter currently lives on her own. Before his arrest, Lee also told an acquaintance that he was planning to turn himself in to the police after "sorting things out."
Lee's daughter was quoted as telling police she found the body while packing her things to move to a new home.
"I was moving the box with my boyfriend, but it was so heavy that I opened it and found a dead woman. I always thought the box belonged to my father and didn't know it contained a dead body," she was quoted as saying.
She also told police that her father left the home about three years after they moved there and has since dropped by about once or twice a month, officials said.
Police said they plan to request an arrest warrant during the day after probing the details.
