So now that I'm taking this Ego weapon seriously, I've started feeding him and I noticed an oddity. When I feed him, let's say Long bows, I get a message that says Strength increased by 6 and Social increased by 6. But the little percentage bars jumped by nearly 10% for each one.
Now I've looked at this thing in the spirit feeding guide in Mabi Wiki
Happy : Unable to give items
Fine Stage 1: 20% Growth efficiency
Fine Stage 2-3: 70% Growth efficiency
Unhappy Stage 1-2: 100% Growth efficiency
Unhappy Stage 3-4: Decrease in attack power stat (70% min, 80% max)
Unhappy Stage 5-6: 80% Growth efficiency
Mad Stage 1-6: Greater decrease in attack power, decrease in injury rate, 50% Growth efficiency
Mad Stage 7-8: Greatest decrease in stats. 0% Growth efficiency. Must continue to give items for no growth to ascend out of this state. (Giving 2 items worth 4000g+ at NPC price is usually the fastest way to get out of this stage. Giving 10 items worth less than 1000g will also work, but takes longer.)
Unhappy stage one has a 100% growth rate, so I should have gotten 6 points right? I got 60% more. So my question is what is my spirit weapon really getting per item, because it's clearly not the number listed in the system messages.

I'm assuming yours is around level 1. As I recall from my past Bipennis ego, 6 is the max amount of points you can get at that level and it always gives 10%. The Long Bow gives the max amount of points for your ego's level, it's actually overkill on it. By overkill, I mean that you can give it something much cheaper and still obtain the max amount of points. What gender is your ego may I ask?

At max, you will get at most 10% of any stat. Each level increases the actual points per 10%. In the beginning levels, you can get it down to really unhappy and still get 5-10% per items.

Ok but the point is the percentages don't match the little system message. It says I got 6, and then I got 10 points.
Also, yes it's a first level Male Sword Spirit. I just made him last night.

Maybe it isn't x/100 EXP. Maybe it is x/60 for level 1.
You should be starting at the top of the list where it easy Lv.1 then look at the cheapest item saying MAX keep doing this until you get to around level 6 or 7 then just feed 7 sign or when potion kits are 950g, when neither of those are available just focus on will or luck.

The bars represents experience percentage. As you level, the amount of number experience to reach 10% grows. Similar to character/exploration experience, the amount of experience per level grows.
Level 1 requires 60 total experience to rank to level 2. 10% of 60 is 6.
Level 2 is 140 total with 10% of 140 is 14.
And the pattern continues...
The experience requires does not grow linearly, but rather, exponentially.

Not that it will matter for too long or really burn a hole in your bank account, but I assume by being "serious" about raising your ego you actually plan to try to do it as well as possible.
If you are getting free longbows/other junk from missions/dungeons and feeding those to your ego, stop doing that. Sell them to an NPC. I know I can get 300-500 gold from the random swords I often get in missions, and that will pay for 2-5 gathering knives. Each gathering knife (at such low levels) will give you 6 exp, so you just multiplied your exp gains by over double.
Once your ego grows a bit more and can actually gain larger amounts of exp per item, then it becomes better to feed the items directly to it. Once you can take the exp of sandals/other 800-900g item, it is usually best to strictly feed it those. Anything more expensive messes up how many items you can feed per hunger level, and ends up being slower than feeding sandals/etc.

The second one means that it still gives 100% growth rate, yet this is the first stage of red (where your min attack is 70% of original, and max attack is 80% of original). This is correct.

That's actually still really helpful so yeah I'll stop buying him nice things for the time being.

You're looking at getting to around lvl 5 in a stat before moving up form gathering knives/similar cheap items. Might even go as far as level 10, it has been awhile since I last fed a young ego. But those levels do go by pretty quickly.

Those levels go by quickly when you keep feeding cheap items to it..And then later on, it's just harder to get the max points off an ego without taking forever to starve it sometimes...D:
