So, anyone know what exactly you're supposed to aim for? Apparently it's
his left tusk, but where exactly? The base of it? The tip of it? Somewhere in the middle? I googled and youtubed all sorts of terms ranging from "Irukul", "Urkul", and "Mammoth" and have yet to find any info/video indicating what you're supposed to hit. Do
Irukul Tusks drop from him or is the break off the only way?
Edit: I believe the point to aim for is, HIS left tusk, and around the middle point, just around where the tusk curves. I'd appreciate it if anyone could verify and confirm this.

I can confirm this, it is definatlely not the base or the tip. I managed to get enough breaks to craft my scythe, and every break was a result of spears to the mid section of the tusk. It doesnt seem to be like the other bosses where one sucessful spear registers as a hit. I have speared the same place numerous times without triggering a flinch animation, sometimes I would get two flinch animations in a row, other times the boss doesnt react to the spear. All in all it takes 4-5 (forgot) sucessful flinch animation for the break to happen with a spear. Hope this helps.

The break point is actually his right tusk, or your left when he's facing you.

so are you suggesting I broke off 12 tusks from his left by some miracle from the goddess?
No, its his left tusk around the mid point.
It is important to note that the flinch animation also occurs if you spear the middle of his right tusk, but honestly I never bothered to do it 5 times just incase the breakoff don't occur. It could very well be either tusks that could both give you the breakoff... IDK
but I know for a fact that his left tusk gives you the break off 100% of the time if you activate the flinch animation 5 times.

Honestly, it seems to me that it's more or less how much damage you put into his tusk, rather then it being a normal break off hit.
Because I regularly just sprint smash (with Fiona) his face after he breaths ice at me at melee range, and yet I've managed to sprint smash his tusk off just once. Maybe that was just super dumb luck though, and I did hit the sweet spot.

You can break it with smashes such as fiona's sprint smash and shield bash. Lann's double crescent. Evie's fire mine... But I find it easier to do with a spear, and the flinch animation helps with teammate's potting or resing other members.

After several more runs/experimenting, I've come to the conclusion that, either tusk is fine, and that you have to hit them multiple times or reach a certain damage threshold to trigger a "hit." It is probably easiest to have people drop those stone weights on him/chain him, then wail away on his face or spear it a bunch of times while he is down or restrained.

has anyone confirmed if BOTH tusks can be broken off for two breaks?
-
jakjak4161 wrote on 2011-02-24 18:41
not two breaks... if you notice, as soon as you break one, the other one appears to be broken too.

^^ ah ok thanks for the clarification...i haven't run it yet so just trying to gather all the info i can.
Another question: Does damage to either tusk contribute to the overall damage for the break...or do you have to focus on one or the other for an efficient break? Seems like it would be easier if you could throw at either tusk.

It should be noted that you can't trigger the hits on a break-off when an enemy is restrained in any way, whether knocked down, or chained.

Except in this case it works when he is down and is the best time to spear his tusk for the break off, unless you're a master spear thrower and can hit him in his other animations.

Break off does work when bosses are knocked down, except it can not be done using secondary.

QFT. Hitting the break-off while he's down is tried and true on Irukul.

Actually you can trigger the break animation when he's down or chained. Ice block in the face when he was chained worked.
