Hibernate problem.

For the past few days, when I hibernate my laptop for more than a couple of hours, it does something funky. When I turn it back on, it gives me the "Windows did not shut down properly" message, with the "start in safe mode?" etc.

The last few times it happened, my network and sound icon disappeared from the system tray, but that's easily fixed. I scanned for malware and viruses, etc, but there wasn't anything. I even restore it back two weeks to when there weren't any problems and when I came back today it crashed again.

I don't really want the "don't hibernate then o3o" thing, because my computer takes forever to boot, and I often stop in the middle of a video, and hibernate rocks like that.

I have vista, a pretty but pretty low-quality dell laptop (it's yellow ouo), and it's almost 2 years old. Which means it shouldn't be screwing up. Again.

So, are you trying to disable Hibernation mode? You can disable it in Power Options in Control Panel.

Not sure if defragging with actually do something, or is the cause of your problem, but this is what this website said.

The disadvantage of Hibernate is that after a period of time, there may have fragmentation of file. Users will need to defragment the volume that stores the hibernation file frequently.

hibernation/sleep shoves the state of your computer onto disk and reloads it so fragmentation is definitely a problem.
Also disk space.

I use sleep mode in favour of hibernate P:

hibernate does freaky **** sometimes, and even changed the memory storage method on it's own, slowing down my computer to a snails pace.. so annoying..

Win7's hibernate mostly works. Vista's mostly doesn't.

Vista, with all the fixes it has gotten over time, should work about the same as Windows 7. >.>

But anyway, these things are a pain in the butt to troubleshoot. It's quite possibly due to the interraction of some device driver and your OS, and/or other software present.. or some weird combination of them all.

The only simple things I can recommend is that you make sure all your drivers are updated to the latest, most stable versions available (check Dell's driver page for your model) and that you have the latest Vista patches. I don't use Vista, so I'm not sure how Windows Update is set up there, but in 7, there is a section for Optional Updates which are not automatically installed. Sometimes, reliability updates are released, and I vaguely recall one having to do with hibernate/sleep issues.

Other than that, if I were in your shoes, I'd format that thing and just reinstall Windows clean. It's good to do that once in a while, anyway.
