upgrades quick question

  Can I upgrade my hetero (not light) with 2 melee pd upgrades or does it have to be +2 def and pd (not interested in range or mage pd).

  As long as you don't use any other for the slots if you want full PD melee with anything else, you're good to go for a full PD Hetero Shield.
  
  You could put some enchants on it or something to make up for the defense that could've been from any of the upgrades or so.

  also consider the gem upgrades. Some boost dura, defense and more PD%
  
  But this mostly depends on the kind of shield you are using :x

  just to confirm before i make the upgrades....I'm talking about the same pd upgrade. In other words, x2 6% passive melee defense for a total of 12% melee. If this is true...does it work for every item?

  Getting only pd upgrades on shields. Yes
  Getting the same total (12%) on any shield. Nope
  Doing just "X" upgrades instead of "Y" upgrade. Yes, only if the upgrade number allows you to do it (Ex. 0-4. Or you need to make another upgrade first [2-3 , 4-4, etc] )
