So what if evie has a story? its not like she has a baby or something, So it wouldn't matter if you can be a male mage.
Changes everything. If you're a dev, are you going to look through works that have been finished, and make sure the story text isn't gender specific? Also, you totally forgot modeling, Any class specific armor now requires making an opposite sex option. Would you rather spend time on that, drawing maybe a few more players paying, or would you rather develop more bosses and content, and draw much more players playing?
Again, it's always the work:profit ratio, if the devs think it's more profitable if they open gender lock, they will. Also, story-line doesn't affect the game, it affect the players. Some players would just quit the game if the plot is inconsistent, or if they made too many changes. Might be minor to you, they can create huge problem with those who has been playing for quite a while. And look at Vindictus as of now, people are still playing even when the mage is a female, no?
The truth is, trying to open gender lock doesn't really help anything, except you will have a high chance of losing player, why in the world would dev wants to do that? Just so new players can pick a male mage?
Gender lock is already there, if you want to have no gender lock, go convince the devs.
