This is nothing new and the way they advertised the information was very misleading. Virtual reality therapy has been around forever, though it was usually employed as a treatment to lower high levels of anxiety. The reverse effect should also hold true. It shouldn't be surprising that the subjects were shocked when they were shown the image of being slapped. Anyone without steel nerves would've felt shocked for the matter.
Also, I didn't like how the article failed to mention that a part of the sensation of feeling like a female could have been attributed to being told about the experiment beforehand. In other words, the sensation they felt could have been caused by bias and not visual sensation.
