TechEBlog Japan Will Send Humanoid Robot to the Moon by 2015
Japan's SOHLA (Space Oriented Higashiosaka Leading Association) has announced that they will be launching a $10.5-million humanoid robot named "Maido-kun" to the moon by 2015. The robot is currently being developed with the Space Exploration Agency of Japan (JAXA). Continue reading to see some JAXA-shot moon footage from the far side.
Oh sure, there's little reason to send a wobbling two-legged robotic rover to the crater-pocked face of the moon when four-on-the-floor would be much more practical -- other than it's awesome.

I wonder how tall/big it'll be...
and I dont see the reason he needs a beam sabre.... unless he's fighting off aliens.

This isn't going to happen. At least, not in gundam style design.

If thats the case, I wonder how they plan to make it look.... leaning towards the more robotic or human side?
2015 isn't thattttttt far away, so they probably have some sort of design layout planned.

They never said how they're going to send it. I'm betting it'll be launched in rocket form and will fold out into humanoid robot form once it lands. Otherwise...it would be very difficult to trace its trajectory. Waste of valuable money either way.

The Gundam should be able to fit inside a shuttle, even in humanoid form. Not sure how big Japanese shuttles are, but if they are similar in size to the American variety, then it should be able to fit in the cargo bay and then dropped onto the moon where people on Earth or the shuttle will correct it so that it lands correctly.

This is cool and all, but isn't this a huge waste of money? o_O

Why send gundam to the moon? For novelty?

Probably because the guys in charge of the japanese NASA are gundam fans.

Probably to get rid of the alien threat. Hell, if I was green, full of tentacles, and travelling through the Solar System, that gundam perched on a moon orbiting the Earth would make Earth look pretty intimidating.

This makes perfect sense.

I don't know what meido means, so until further explanations it seems fine to me D:
