Tokyo Magnitude 8.0

  I don't know if anybody has watched this, but I thought it was interesting because of the recent disaster in Japan.
  It's basically about an earthquake with a magnitude of 8.0 hitting Tokyo, and how the citizens deal with the tragedy. It mostly follows these 2 little kids who are trying to make their way home to find their parents who they haven't been able to contact. City gets completely destroyed etc etc..
  
  The series was released in 2009, and it takes place in 2012. Also, I think i read somewhere that they created this series from knowing that there was a high possibility that an earthquake of high magnitude would be hitting Japan in the near future. So knowing this they told the story on how they thought people would deal with the disaster.
  
  So if anybody wants to watch it, it's only 11 eps. I don't watch that many series lately, but this was an exception for me. Amazingggg, and the ending made me cry. ):

  Japan was prepared. Not prepared enough, but everyone knew it was coming and they had basic preparations against Earthquakes ready. Otherwise there would've been far more dead.

  Yea, they were well prepared for high magnitude earthquakes... though that tsunami pretty much broke all defenses.
  I don't know how they weren't prepared for a tsunami since tsunami is a japanese word, you'd think they throw those into the equation there somewhere.

  Yea because they're used to earthquakes, so they were quite prepared for it. At least compared to other countries. I'm not too sure about the history of Japan's experience with tsunamis though..

  I was genuinely interested in this. I tried watching the first episode when it first came out, but I had trouble finishing it because the protagonist was suffering from a severe case of 8th-grade sickness. I promised myself I'd watch it once the series finished, but I never did...

  When you're facing a 20+ foot tsunami that can carry even large cargo ships, there aren't many ways to protect against that, if at all.

  Yea the first ep is kind of slow, but at the end of the ep after the earthquake hits, thats where it starts to get interesting. Finish ittt~ You won't regret!

  What I meant by that was... how about not putting a nuclear powerplant right on the coast.
  The waves only traveled about 5 kilometers inland, if the plants were placed on the inner city (or closer to it, but in a non populated area) I'm sure matter would not have been made as bad as they were.

  Uh, the nuclear power plant needs water to cool down the fuel rods, which comes from the coast.

  Money and convenience. Other than safety concerns, is there any reason you would pump thousands of gallons from the sea to places further inland, which requires more fuel (money), construct a whole network of pipes to pump water from the sea (time and money), and build another network of pipes to pump hot water back into the sea (more time and money), when you could just build a plant right next to the sea? Not to mention, there would be the maintenance of the pipes that you'd have to do constantly because hot seawater would be detrimental to the pipes.

  it is indeed a double edged sword, however money shouldn't be an issue for Japan when it concerns safety in a tsunami hotspot; I wonder what move they will take after this series of disasters where they will ill-prepared.
  and errosion shouldnt be a problem with glass fiber reinforced polyester pipes, although yes it is expensiiive (but the standard)

  Way easier said than done. I don't know any nuclear plants that aren't built near rivers or the ocean since that is a lot of water that needs to used, since the steam is what generates the electricity. I think Japan did build the Fukushima nuclear plant on higher ground as a precaution, but apparently that wasn't enough.
