Wishing you the best of luck! :)
Remember to take breaks so you don't go crazy. I took a lot of those.

My alchemy tab has nothing inside it right now. I dunno if I should even bother yet, I've been playing again for about 2 weeks now and I haven't even been curious about it.

Eh, don't force yourself. You'll only become less interested.

Barrier has been key to me soloing any shadow missions on my human. They have too much HP to safely magnum spam without a little wall of forgiveness in between us. It lets me take down their barriers too since I can usually outdamage the ones that aggro me. So, if you're an archer, I highly recommend raising spikes at least.
As for mastery, I've been raising it with golem summoning...but I have this sinking feeling that spikes would be better for that, especially after seeing this thread.

My playstyle is 100% melee, with the ocasional bolt tossed in when needed. Other than soloing things I probably shouldn't, spikes seem like they'd just get in the way. I do plan to get them exactly for that purpose but it's nowhere near being a priority, or even a distant goal right now.

Mana crystals are better than anything for alchemy training, but the end results aren't as useful as with barrier spikes and golem. If you focus on making ice mines however, you'll add synth completions into the equations as well as a more usable end product.
