I've watched the first 20 minutes or so but wasn't fazed at all, while I read comments about how they "cried all the time since xx:xx". It's too distant somehow, I can't relate to it. The completely emotionless protagonists sure aren't helping.

Obviously, you can't get the scope of the movie in just the first 20 minutes. It was a sad movie, but I think End of Evangelion was more depressing.

I do realise the scope of the movie, but "the scope of the movie" is a bit too abstract to influence me. I'm emphatic in so far that I suffer with people who I notice suffering, not in so far that statistics make me cry. Except when I reeeeeeeeeeeeeally get into it and purposely try hard to imagine them feeling pain. It doesn't just come so though.
Jin-Roh really got me for example.

Old school. Never watched the entire thing, didn't peek my interest. Though I've heard how good it was.
Only movie that's every made me tear is Pokemon the First Movie when i was a kid. These days, not much really fazes me, physically, terms of sadness.

I cried at the end, but I wasn't balling. I teared up at the opener to Gran Turismo 5 though so I know I'm just over emotional.

You haven't seen the movie, you have proven you have no idea if it is a sad movie or a happy movie, Its actually quite a depressing movie, if you would have watched it you would get how sad it is, unless you're some 7 year old who won't get the story line of the damn movie.

He's just stating his opinion. No need to get worked up~
I might watch it. Looks interesting enough.

I was expecting 5 Centimeters per Second. What's this supposed to be?

The movie would have been less tragic if the older brother just swallowed his damn pride and lived with his aunt and worked.
I think he was just didn't want to prove that she was right and that he was wrong the whole time.
It was a sad movie when I first watched it, but now that I can further get into the story, I understand what it symbolizes.

I know that it is about how war is a terrible tragedy. It's just that this is too abstract to make me cry by itself, and that I didn't get moved very much for the while I've been watching it. I never said I'd never ever cry over the course of the whole movie ever. There might well be a point where it gets more involving than in the beginning, but that's totally beside my point, which is that it didn't touch me as far as I tried it.
Maybe you can help me here though, does anyone ever start to act like the world as broken down or do they stay as cool as in the beginning? If they do it'd probably make me cry, perhaps even hard.

It follows a brother caring for his sister after they've lost their mum in a bombing raid. Not sure if there was a dad, I can't remember any though.

Tokyo Magnitude beats it even though its just a series related to the earth quake but the ending is still sad.
