I ran a nice little avast scan today for the first time in forever.

lol yes you should. It seems there's signs of a rootkit being present on your system. That's not good at all. xd
Looks like Avast has a horrible real-time scanner. :P
Quarantine those files as Avast recommends. If something breaks as a result, you can restore them from the "chest".
I have a zero-tolerance policy for infections with all the computers I work with, though. Just nuke everything and re-install Windows, restoring documents and stuff from backups.
