It sounds cheaper than paying a buck for it because the first digit of the price is 0. At least, that's what I think anyways. It gets more people to think they're saving on something if it's priced lower and buy it. The bad thing is that when you buy it, you get a penny.

It looks like it costs less.
$300 vs. $299, what one physically looks cheaper?

People subconsciously assume 1.99 is actually closer to 1 dollar instead of 2, even though they consciously know its not. This will make them FEEL its a better deal.
Its a marketing strategy.

Well it's .99 cents cause of tax. If something cost 1$ you have to pay tax. Like here in Taxachusetts tax here is 0.06 cents so if I bought something that cost a dollar I'd have to pay 1.06 which is kinda dumb cause then I'd have to take 1$ and One Nickel and a Penny or 6 Pennies but if it cost .99 cents I'd just hand the clerk a dollar.

because they want to annoy you with a dirty penny.

Yep. Well know if you had to choose between two exactly identical items at or near the same place, you would pick the 1.99 one instead of the 2.01 instinctively. Or more realistically, 1.99 or 2.10 (one with taxes included in price).

Massachusetts is weird.
Tax is applied regardless of price, unless it's something like groceries or some kind of currency (phone card, prepaid credit card, virtual cash). So the $0.99 turns into $1.07, and the $1.00 turns into $1.08.
Also you guys have low sales tax - 9.75% in Los Angeles. :T_T:

Here (Australia), i think it's just for marketing purposes.
We don't have pennies =w= (Notes: $100, $50, $20,$10, $5 Coins: $2, $1, 50c, 20cents, 10 cents, 5 cents)
When you pay by card then the actual amount gets deducted from your amount, whereas if you pay by cash you pay to the nearest decimal or something like that...i think. o-o ($1.99-->paybycash-->any amount higher than $1.99 and you don't get 0.01cent(s) of change. So pay with a $2 coin and you don't get anything back.)
And then there's tax, but let's not get into that :)

You do know that this would never happen to countries like Singapore.
There is no 1 cents, you pay in fives.
1.95/ 2.00, and in most cases, it's the dollars you'll be paying.

It's a massive conspiracy to dump unwanted pennies onto the consumer. Even though 0.99 will cost more like 1.13 over here. Freaking taxes.

Ha, you've never seen me and my friends paying for a PSP.
$300 dollars man.
Yeah, 300.
In 5 cents coins. We've each carried a bag of 5 cents coins that's about 3.12KG per person (There's 3 of us.)
All in total, theres 6,000 5 cents coins.
1.56 g per coin, 300 dollars worth of 5 cents coins.
Love it when people gives me small change. Perfect trolling tool.

If that happens, then you can only troll people with huge notes.
Like...
$1,000 for a 80 cents mentos, maybe?
I did that once at 7-11 though.
