okkkkkkk!!! so in order to get stupid tough strings for handicraft c, i need to raft and get 31+ stars.
>.< this is so frustrating!! i dont plan on partying so this question is if i were soloing rafting ok.
without ranged or adv magic i suppose it is impossible to kill that many. i have thunder learned on f
and well, right now... as you can see im trying to raise dex by doing handi and other things. my original plan was to do as much small dex giving skills and then do ranged a lot later. i guess i am a semipro~ lvl 9xx. my ranged attack is on rank f as well. is it time for me to learn an adv magic?? i dont know if thunder is cool... i just got it because it was easy to get. fireball looks cool cuz of the strength it gives later on, but for the skill itself ice spear looks most useful. which one is best to rank up, and at what rank is it enough to kill hobgoblins?? also, instead of adv magic, should i just do ranged?? i dont think... adv magic will do me that much good. i dont really do things that require that stuff. is ranged enough to kill hobgoblins to get 31+ stars per raft?? and at what rank??

Do Weaving for dex :S and you will be able to make tough string with weaving too

But it takes so longggggg.
I personally think you should start ranking Ranged, for the dex and for other situations where Ranged is more beneficial than melee. I currently have r1 Ranged, r2 AR, and r5 Magnum, which is enough to net me at least 10 Iron Ingots and 3 Tough Strings each rafting trip. If you really don't feel like spending all that AP ranking Ranged stuff, then consider ranking Thunder to 6, which will cost you 157 AP (~2 rebirths).

Even with infinite gold, you couldn't easily do weaving in a week .-.
As for rafting, thunder is by far the best advance magic to use there. Ranged can do ok, but it would be difficult to get enough stars on a per leg basis resulting in 3 per trip. If your skill ranks aren't up to the task there's always alchemic thunder if you know anyone with high rank crystallization. A 5 charge r9 crystal generally does the trick.

It's possible to get 31 Stars twice with Rank F Thunder, it's not easy but it's certainly possible. I can try taking a video later tonight when I have time. Speed cast or Mana reduction bonuses will help a lot.
You don't need to rank it but ranking it will help a lot. I'm an AP jew and I try to restrict my spending as much as possible.
Rank B Thunder (33 AP) will get you 1 extra target and 0.5 second cast time reduction, and Rank 9 Thunder (87 AP) will take off another 0.5 seconds. I don't see that as worth it (especially since I have both Ice Spear and Fireball ranked up pretty high), but that's my preference.
Also, if you're planning on ranking magic for use outside of rafting as well, I suggest Fireball. Since you like to do party runs, Fireball gets you just as much damage but is way easier to use.

hmmm well with only normal ranged attack to 1, it won't be enough to get 31 stars?? and isnt thunder suckie for soloing raft?? since it takes so long to charge them i mean.. and you cant move.
ranged attack to 1 = 151 ap's
thunder to 6 = 159 ap's.
i wanted to learn ranged anyways... im leaning toward ranged :o
hmm fireball... it looks nice and stuff but, i actually need to get those pages and stuff~ if im gonna spend money, isn't ice spear more practical?? it's hella fast, and i dont like it that fb takes so long to impact.

You will generally have enough time to charge Thunder at least once before you reach each spawn. At r6, you'll be able to hit 3 targets at once, and you should be able to 1hko the hobgoblins, depending on how much Int you have. Just using regular human Ranged is not enough to get the ideal number of stars, unless you do a lot of damage. You'll need decently ranked AR and/or Magnum to be able to get the stars you need. Although Thunder is generally more efficient for rafting than Ranged is, I'd still recommend you rank Ranged, since I think you're primarily melée and will need the extra dex for other weapons. Just my take.

Thunder is great for rafting, even though you can't move you outrange the goblins and can hit clumps of them at a time for pretty high damage. Fireball takes too long to cast and ice spear has a shorter range and lower base damage.
Ranged doesn't have time to get things done unless you can kill everything in one shot...which is unlikely.

D: i guesss.... ranged isnt efficient for getting tough string.
now i know thunder is the way to go for getting that,
but now my question is:
rank thunder in order to rank handi
or
just leave handi for now and rank other dex stuff and ranged ??
i dont want to get sidetracked.... like. my main goal was to raise dex xD and then ill be ending up spending all my ap's on a magic skill??? pfft.
because i know handi requires some failures, and well i guess i can make myself a scarecrow set but... is it ok if i get my dex really high before ranking handi any higher??

You don't need failures for Handicraft, but it helps. I think the Handicraft failure danger mark is around 100 dex. I'm currently at rA Handicraft, and failing rB-r9 Handicraft items would give me about 12 prof, which is 36 wood boards less than I'd need to make if I didn't rely on those fails (I need to make Nao Costume Kits, which give 1 prof and costs 3 wood boards to make).
Ranking Thunder right now might be good, since you'll have an easy alternative to making money if you don't feel like dungeoning. The AP investment isn't too harsh for r6, so you could continue ranking your other combat tab skills after you're done.

I use a Mana Reduction Lightning Wand and I do fine with my slow Thunder. A Speedcast Crystal Lightning Wand would be a lot better, but I'm too lazy to make one. The range on Thunder is long enough so that you don't have to worry about it most of the time.
If you want to rank Range, then just go with that. However, it's a lot harder to do well without really good stats and maxed AR/Magnum/Range, which will take quite a while.
/insert thunder video later

No offense, but I don't believe that for a second. Something about all the leathers you'd have to have and how long it takes to do certain ranks (8 comes to mind) that make it rather impossible to finish in just 7 days without a legion of people supporting you and even then it's hardly easy.
I don't know what to say really, no matter how I turn it over in my head the result comes out the same. I can't fathom how it's possible without buying leather even playing 24/7...and again that hardly qualifies as easy.
@bebe
I'd say rank thunder a bit, it'll pay off in the end. If possible, shelfing handicraft would be a good call as well. It gets -much- easier with good ranks in some other dex skills.

well.... thunder, you say is for making money?? :T the only reward i see worth anything much is the tipping suit, which can be npc'd for a lil over 20k. i don't have any use for thunder really besides to get me the damned tough string. >:O
@chillax, the danger point for failures is 100 dex, you mean after scarecrow set or before?? because right now my dex is 103.
oh i missed juno's comment. hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm maybe..... ranking thunder could be fun xD
i dont really need ranged for fighting right now.. so i guess there is no rush. or i can rank both at the same time
