Well, they look like around ears to me. The Sennheiser site says that as well. "Around Ear Headphones"
Their entire Audiophile line are around ear headphones.
And by the way, I wouldn't do that mod. It doesn't really work. Gotta be careful what random videos you listen to on the internet.
Oh and if you wait until tomorrow, I should be able to tell you how the HD 515's feel.
What do you mean it won't work? <__< I'm wearing modded 555's right now. All it does is remove piece of foam blocking some of the sound. The parts are made to be taken apart and put back together for easy replacement.

Alrighty, well I'm wearing them right now for about 5 minutes. They seem to get my ears a little warm. You can't really feel them on, they aren't squishy like most headphones though. Their padding is pretty firm. I hear you have to break them in or something, but they're definitely firmer than I'm used to.
I don't know of my Ear Force DSS is having any effect on the heat, but the sound is fine. I have the bass boost all the way up and they still have pretty weak bass I'd say.
I'm testing the surround right now with this:

It seems decent. I can tell which direction sounds are coming from for sure.
edit: Oh and uh, they definitely don't touch the ear at all.
