Alice of the Well is part of my Alice Malice series. Alice Malice is basically the (somewhat) morbid retelling of the Alice in Wonderland story.
The story is that one night, Alice Williams (pictured) is playing outside and it starts to get dark. So she takes her story book (presumably Alice in Wonderland) and reads it on her porch with her little lamp. So she looks up for a second and sees a shadowy figure move across the lawn and hop over a fence and drop something into the neighbor's abandoned well. So she decides to see who it was,but by the time she arrives at the well, the person she saw is gone. So she looks into the well and she sees a faint glow, like a candle and leans in a bit closer to see what it is,but Alice loses her grip and falls....onto a mattress. Turns out she landed in an underground orphanage nobody knew about. Basically, the orphange is for children:
A) Can't afford to keep the child (in some cases the parents couldn't afford to keep the child any longer because they were so poor)
B) The parents were arrested (the child being taken into state custody or something)
C)A run-away (not a usual case but there a few down there)
D)Both parents are dead (the most common I've heard of)
Most of the characters from the original Alice in Wonderland are portrayed as either people or items associated with the orphanage. For example:
The Red Queen: A young girl who causes the most trouble for everyone. She wears a red dress and carries a pack of playing cards she found on the street. Her parents got divorced and her father obtained custody of her but she ran away. Her real name isn't known.
The Watch Rabbit (also known as the Supply Rabbit): A young man whose real name is Timothy. He delivers food, water, blankets etc to the orphanage by dropping them down the well.
The White Queen: The person who runs the orphanage. Everyone refers to her as "Grandma" because she is elderly. She is Timothy's grandmother and started the orphanage after finding a set of twins collecting scraps on the street for money and wanted them to be safe and healthy.
The Card Knights: (Not an actual character but is portrayed as a game the Red Queen plays. Similar to a regular card game).
The March Hare: A little boy who was abandoned at birth. His real name is Geoffrey.
The Jabberwocky: Isn't a character either.....well it could be. A monster that the children believe in. (Similar to the Boogey Man).
The Vorpal Sword: A cardboard sword Timothy made for the children to play with. The Red Queen keeps it under her bed and doesn't let anyone else touch it. This upsets the White Queen and tries to take it from her but the Red Queen will start a tantrum.
The reason why it's underground (if you're wondering) is because the Government forbids other orphanages to be set up (except for state-care and all that hoopla) because they want to save money to get out of the recession (like that's ever going to happen).
