Too late, they can even force you to turn over encryption passwords or send you to jail. At least at airports, I'm guessing the border is the same thing.

I know someone who got their laptop dismantled in search of explosives by the TSA. They won't in any way replace it or compensate him for it, and the warranty is void because of what they did to it.
Pretty much lost 1500$+ on a brand new laptop thanks to the good old USA.
