Why is it that, as a culture, we are more comfortable seeing two men holding guns than holding hands? ~Ernest Gaines
Presuming he means soldiers by "two men holding guns".

Or maybe he means Mexican stand-offs.
Either way, it's a good quote.

Hah, right? It could also be applied to the amount of violence we have as-well. Be it video games or crimes.. that sort of thing.
It's all fairly.. common. Average.

conflict is masculine?
Though unsure about the why part, but it's definitely because of the culture. In India, men who are friends hold hands very enthusiastically IIRC.
Hell, pink used to be the men's colour due to it's close proximity to red. Things evolve and change, as will our current culture.

Well to be fair, guns do look way cooler.

the masculine image has a lot to do with pride and insecurity (which all goes back to society/how everyone is raised and common belief, though). It really all depends on society; ours is still rather.. eh. People are forced to live up to such unrealistic, daft examples. We have changed and evolved a lot, no denying that, but we've still got to continue growing.
Anyways, my main issue is and always has been when people force those beliefs onto others, which is another reason why I enjoy this quote. =P People can believe what they wish, so long as they don't try and force it on me. (which is what is going on in the world right now)

Seems like the quote is referring to people/society more willing to fight or start wars instead of getting along. In modern context this quote might be applicable to the countless wars started instead of going the diplomatic or peacekeeping way. Thus leading to us "the culture" being desensitized and blasé (more comfortable) to seeing wars and conflicts on t.v. compared to "men holding hands" or where societies/mankind are willing to get along.

Huh. Strange, in my mind I had you comparing it with close combat weapons.
Nah, hands are prettier. Except in some cases, like the Steyr AUG.

It's not about pretty. Holding guns or holding hands. Which looks more cool?
Unless you're like hanging off an alien ship crashing down a canyon with an explosion below you and debris flying up, trying to save the other person's life by grabbing their hand, and maybe incorporate a shark somewhere in there... then holding hands like that might look pretty cool.
Basically, holding hands is a very protective nurturing action while guns are a very offensive violent action. We're a very violent society.
