My laptop is a Lenovo X61.
and it runs HOT. If I go flip into tablet mode for half an hour, I will be unable to type if I switch back to keyboard mode because of the heat. I'm pretty sure if I just leave it on a flat wooden surface the laptop would shut itself down.
not to mention if I place it on a flat surface, it becomes searing rather quickly. I need it propped up at all times. This is can get aggravating. And this is just from having a browser open.
is this normal? I notice it running a bit slower over time as well, (loading stuff, mainly, especially hard drive access).
the model itself is as old as hell btw. Last time this lappy got cleaned was about 3 months ago I think. (Dust, checked and replaced a fan, etc.)
ideas? cooling pads are out of the question btw, I treat this tablet laptop like.. well, a tablet, not a desktop laptop.

Wut.. o_o Definitely not normal. That model is known for getting quite warm due to its compact nature, but it shouldn't be anywhere near that bad.
When you say you replaced the fan.. did you by any chance remove the heatsink from the cpu/board? 'cause if you do that, you ruin the layer of thermal grease that was applied between the chip that's to be cooled and the heatsink, which is there to transfer the heat from one part to the other. Whenever you remove and install a heatsink, you have to completely clean the contact surfaces of the chip/heatsink block and apply fresh thermal grease first. x(
If it's not that... did you ever update the BIOS on it? I just looked at the X61 Tablet's support page and they have a new BIOS available, released in April 2011. :O Looking at the BIOS update history, there have been fixes relating to power management, so it could be relevant to your problem.

woa woa, I have no idea about the heat sink, but I assume not since the guy who replaced it has a high tech level on this stuff (I'll ask him anyway). But I had no idea about the bios, I'll have to try that out now.

Also, turns out certain lenovo laptops (including mine) make some sort of high pitched noise that drives my brother crazy (and other lenovo owners), but it's not perceptible to my ears. I lucked out!

Oh I see. If whoever did it knew what they were doing, then they wouldn't make that mistake, as it's a common sense thing for anyone who has some computer hardware knowledge. I don't think you need to worry about that. x3 I only mentioned it because I remembered how I disassembled my old Toshiba laptop for fun, to see if I could then put it back together. I unscrewed everything I could, which included the CPU heatsink.. pretty silly move on my part. xP

Mine was hot and my brother took it to Best Buy to get it poofed. LOL. Dust came out =O

D: .. I seee.. And haha, I had an old Toshiba before this x61 coincidentally. A portégé to be exact.
And good news for me then. I almost half want the heat sink to be gone so that the solution would be clear.
oh wait, I should be upgrading the bios.. /runs off
AND THANKS RASBERRY D:< I might just end up cleaning it out again if it doesnt change, altho it proly wont change much.

I don't know much about laptops, but it may be time to get a new one?

perhaps your fan is dead?
i know for a fact mine is dead/dying on my own laptop and it runs hot as well.
sorry about your computer, mama

My laptop started getting hot a while ago. To the point of overheating if I didn't shut it off every few hours. It was alleviated by keeping it propped up with good ventilation, but it still makes my room hotter than twenty five sweating anuses.
My solution?
Big ass fan.

D:
well, update..
tech guy took laptop apart and cleaned it of dust (metal fan couldn't be put apart so just used compressed air), and replaced the cooling paste. Apparently the old stuff was made of aluminum and there was too much of it, and it's now been replaced by fresh ceramic paste.
Also
undervolted the CPU by .600v and got rid of the high pitched buzz by enabling low-frequency mode (dumb processor. Tech dude says this would make the biggest temperature difference)
it's now cooling a
LOT better. Hooray!
now, hopefully I'll get a cheap solid state disk tomorrow since they're on sale, and then my laptop will be in tip top shape once more.
