The stereotypes are bad.
There is nothing wrong with being an otaku of any kind as long as you can lead a healthy lifestyle outside of your hobbies. Its only a problem when you sacrifice your job, family, friends, and other priorities in life to pursuit your obsession, which is unhealthy.
However because otakus are stereotyped as such, we tend to be looked down on.

Otaku is generally an insult for someone who's too obsessed with something, so I think I'd rather be called a "fan" of something instead. xD;
I don't have figurines, but I'd like to. There are some I really like. Mostly I collect manga, and watch anime online.
Being a stereotypical Otaku is for people with money to spare. 8D;

It's not that people are stereotyped as such, it's just what an Otaku is.
It's not the term that's wrong; it's people using the term so improperly that is wrong.

Not by definition of Otaku it isn't.
I would be considered a hardcore gaming and anime otaku but I can/do retain a healthy life involving a job, studies, friends, and a social life.

Wait, are we talking about your houses!?
ãŠå®… ï¼ã€€like, another word for your house
ã‚ªã‚¿ã‚¯ã€€ï¼ Slang for the word geek.
And just to clarify, reason why people don't want to be viewed as otakus, is because nobody likes them. They can't finish high school because they are too obsessed with their addiction. So what do they do? live off their parent's money while "taking" care of them. They can't fit into normal society and are too much of a hassle. They don't benefit to the society.
but being otaku isn't TOO horrible. I mean, most people don't mind TOO much, if you can contribute to society. One of my sister's friend was a wotaku, and would follow this voice actor's work. I forget who it was, but she pretty much watched everything he did dialogue for, but other then that small obsession, she was perfectly normal.

There are two qualifications you must meet in my eyes:
1) You can't start a conversation without referring to some anime/manga and how much you're addicted to it
2) The conversation is awkward as hell because you speak loudly/obnoxiously/quickly all while being ignorant of the people around you that may or may not judge you
Otaku is not a nice word nor would I ever want to be labeled as such. If it's used as (for the most part) a discriminatory term in Japan, why the hell is it okay to throw around the world in American?

No we call that a weaboo.
Otaku actually HAS a legitimate definition defined NOT by anime and manga. I've been trying to get that point across for a while in this thread. We primarily focus on anime and manga when saying Otaku because its the most frequent type, at least outside of Japan.
In Japan there are significant numbers of idol otakus as well, followed by military otakus and car otakus.

If we are going to refer to anime, I guess nobody has seen Kurage hime, or High school of the dead. They show different types of Otakus and show why they tend to be weird.

Military otakus seen in anime...
Highschol of the dead, that one fat guy with an obsession with guns.
Evangelion, shinji's classmate with the glasses.
There are two types of military otakus. One always drools over their obsession, collect models and figures. Another drools over their obsession, collects models and figures, and eventually join the sdf.

Otaku
^ Tv tropes page. There's a couple of categories of common types of otakus just in case for the people who just believe in the anime/manga ones.
There's a pretty serious definition of it and it already addresses some issues mentioned earlier in this thread like how Americans view the term otaku as.

I don't use money in figurine, poster or anything of the sort, I get animes, manga and games for free on the internet and whatnot.
I go to an anime convention once a year and out of the 3 day, I cosplay one of them.
My life purpose right now is simply to keep living to see more animes and manga.
Is that enough to fit the otaku criteria?

I am always around anime/manga. Thinking about it, watching, listening to anime music, playing games with anime styled characters (now that i think about it, about 98% of all my games are anime-esque) I am almost constantly thinking of stories i wanna write for a manga (I know its next to impossible for an american to be a mangaka, but I at least wanna write some kind of comic book) I have anime and game poster on my walls, and lots of manga flooding my desk. I cosplayed once, as Carmine from Growlanser, and people wouldnt leave me the hell alone, (naruto people running up to me and yelling "I wont let you get away" or something like that, for example) so I never did it again. My laptop is filled with anime pictures, manga, games, all that good stuff.
So yeah, I suppose i can be considered an otaku. :glasses:
