I just recently got into Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood, cause I like alchemy, and I was wondering-- How many transmutation circles are there? Is there one for every material and new material combination? 'Cause that doesn't seem very practical.

the cat was always under the impression that there's one standard alchemy circle
except for the ones used to revive dead people

They alchemy circles were more, to do anything, but then they would be specialized, like Roy Mustang's were only good for flame alchemy, and the one to make a philosopher stone, was just for that.
Or any of the ones used when Brotherhood was climaxing, with all that... spoiler stuff.

Depends on the type of alchemy. Won't spoil anything though

The best kind of alchemy is the one done without the use of those fancy circles. Circles are only needed if you be nub and haven't seen a certain spoiler thing. Of course some spoiler things are just too big to be done without circles and require more than just the circle to begin with!
Anyways, clap your hands, Slam them to the ground, and let your attacks loose!

Circles are for squares.
And I am pretty sure that there is a circle for any form of material combination.

A Circle's inscription is like an Action you want alchemy to do. The more complicated the action, the more complicated the inscription will be. The action can also be partially modified or manipulated by the user of the circle.
Now for those who think took much about the hand claping.. Advance alchemists can instictly think up a circle's inscription and if they got the weird knowledge from the other side of the door, they can write any inscription in an instand when they clap their hand and form the basic of the circle.

Oh, so is not the thing they're transmuting, it's the type of alchemy? Awright, makes sense.

I just started watching FMA (from the beginning) and I must say I'm impressed. And it's nice to know about the circles too (although it's looking like they aren't entirely necessary all the time judging from Ed). Anyways glad I saw this thread.

I thought there was a specific circle+runes for whatever it was the alchemist was trying to use. That's why Alchemists keep their circles "on" them, so to speak. Like Mustang's Gloves, Armstrong's knuckles, Kimblee's palms.
Ed is a special case. Alchemy without a transmutation circle is a big deal for a specific reason that's explained in the show but...
It's because he performed human transmutation, he opened the door of truth, and sacrificed his leg for the knowledge.
It amazes me how they can draw a perfect circle, sometimes without even looking at it and manages to complete drawing the transmutation circle in under one minute
