Just a small rant about what I've been told yesterday.
Apparently because I'm 18, I cannot go to public school anymore. Now, I know I'm not the best kid in the world. I didn't make the perfect grades, I didn't even finish my last month of school, and I barely even paid attention in class when/if I did. That still doesn't give them the right to just tell me I cannot go to school. I was planning on passing this year and going to college next year. I had planned my whole future based upon going back to school in August. They even sent my report card saying "Your child will be in 12th grade the following school year" in June. When in the world did they decide this?
My mother posted on facebook about this. She has a few teachers of the county added and they commented saying that this was something new that they hadn't heard of. The principal's excuse for not allowing me? He would have to allow all the trouble making 18 year olds who want to learn back in.
As my fellow nationers, I ask of you. Were they right in baring my access to public education?

That rule has to be serious bull****.
By their logic, anybody who's been held back a grade/doesn't pass senior year can't finish school. [because, if you're held back, you'd be over 18 when you graduate...]
sheesh, I hope there's somewhere you can go to complain/manage to get something done about it.

Thing is, my mother is friends with a boy I know whom is also 18. He turns 19 in October. If he is allowed back in school, to sign up, on Tuesday she plans on getting a Lawyer.
I plan on calling the Board of Education in my district Monday and pressing them about this. If this really is something that only partakes in this school, I'm sure as hell not going to let him do that.

According to the Tennessee State Board of Education a school district is NOT allowed to refuse to enroll a student who is 18 years or older. However, school districts may refuse to enroll you based on limited circumstances. But the principle of the school cannot refuse you, in order for you to get refused the local board of education must make the decision to disallow you entrance.
So unless your principle has specifically gone to the board and provided evidence as to why you SHOULDN'T be allowed to attend school this fall, and the board agreed with him, the principle has no legal standings in his decision.
Also...Does the specific district that you're in have a policy about 18 year olds having to attend an Adult High School?

What about people who turn 18 while already in school? "Happy birthday! now get out."
For sure there's something wrong with this, the whole concept seems too stupid even for american schools.

That's really weird... In my school, a lot of the kids do their last year over if they didn't get the marks they wanted. Everyone calls it a "Victory Lap" and I know that many of the kids are over 18. Although I am in Canada, but it really can't be that different, can it?

Worst case scenario, you can get a GED (it's just a little test) then continue on to college.

Yea, getting a GED, and then going to college works just fine too. Once you get a degree in college or university, high school diploma or whatever doesn't matter.
I haven't really heard of the being 18 prevents people from finishing school though. I heard that you can drop school at 18, which I seen people do, but I haven't really heard of school preventing people from going at 18 until now.

Yeah it's a pretty obvious, mischievous and bad scheme to get rid of you.

Well, if your mom ends up going with the lawyer option, and it's obvious that your principal is in the wrong, get the local media involved. Shame that bastard into oblivion and ruin his career.

Well, I can see where she's comin' from-- there is no reason for her not to go back, which iffs her.
If they somehow still refuse you, though; GED's really aren't that bad. So long as you have a College degree, people don't really care anymore.

Educational cost cuts, perhaps?

I definitely agree with this. If they really take it that far, then they need to be shamed.

Funny thing, my school district has the money to do a lot of things. They even had enough money to give to my school to rebuild old buildings.
I will DEFINITELY get the local news involved though.
