Anime that doesn't follow manga often goes in a direction that's....less good. I can't say it's always terrible, but it's often the case.

The problem is that the story is originally from the manga, but when they continue without it then that means it's that series' death. For example, let's say season 1 is made from the manga, season 2 they ran out of manga so they made it up. Then, the manga continues but all of the characters died in season 2 of the anime, whereas in the manga they continue on with their adventures and the story is centered around them. With such vast differences, it's impossible to continue the anime series from the manga, and then shows end up dropped.
Ex: Gantz (s1 - manga, s2 - fake)
