Yikes.
But I like hotdogs and deli meats.
This is as unsettling as that tour I saw of a ketchup factory...

Good thing I don't eat much of it

No wonder my Dad tells me to cut down on processed meats.
Basically what my folks are saying that the nitrites are the cause of it. This article makes no mention.
I prefer meat fillets to processed meats though. The trouble is that meat fillets take more time to prepare. Sometimes I am just plain lazy.

I've known this for awhile.

Uhm, it says in the article that every hot dog you eat increases your chances of getting cancer by 21%. Excuse me, but that's ridiculous. Everyone who's eaten 5 or more hot dogs in their life would be guaranteed to get cancer, then?

Yeah been around for a long time, we haven't had deli meats here in about 10 years.
Even before I knew they caused cancer I couldn't stand the taste, I like real meat.
Also, everything causes cancer.

If you arbitrarily take the ground risk for cancer to be like 2% or whatever, then +21%
of that isn't very much.

Ah, I thought it was building up from 0. That makes more sense.

The article does mention nitrites as a possible cause, actually!

I'm sure they don't mean it like that. It's probably more like, if you had a 1% chance to get cancer at first, each 'dog will increase that 1% by 21%. Ultimately, they simply looked at data and checked how quickly (?) people die of cancer vs how many hot dogs they ate, and came up with that number.

Then again, what man made product DOESN'T cause cancer these days?
