Layton passed away at his home in Toronto early on Monday surrounded by his wife and children, his family said in a statement.
His left-leaning New Democratic Party (NDP) surged to become the official opposition for the first time in May's federal elections.
He stepped down only last month as party leader to fight his illness.
"We deeply regret to inform you that the Honourable Jack Layton, leader of the New Democratic Party of Canada, passed away at 04:45 local time [08:45 GMT] today," his family said in a statement.
"He passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by family and loved ones."
Layton announced he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer in February 2010.
He campaigned in spring this year, leaning on a cane after surgery for broken hip, and led his party to a second-place finish in May's federal elections.
On 25 July, the former municipal politician from Toronto said he was quitting temporarily as NDP leader to fight a newly diagnosed "non-prostate cancer".
He was elected in 2003 as leader of the left-leaning New Democrats, long the third-place federal party in the Canadian parliament.
Before that, the Quebec native was an activist and community organiser in Toronto, campaigning on issues such as Aids, poverty, violence against women and homelessness.
He was elected MP in 2004 from a constituency in Toronto.
His popularity helped the NDP to overtake the Liberals in May's elections and become the country's official opposition party.
He is survived by his wife Olivia Chow, also an NDP MP, and children Michael and Sarah.

Oh my... he was the lifeblood of the NPD and now he's gone, may he rest in peace.

Harper must secretly be happy, the figurehead of the only group that could have caused him problems is now gone. He's the guy people voted for when they were voting NPD, the party itself doesn't matter anymore.

It's such a shame to see him ago. He just seemed like such a genuine nice guy unlike Ignatieff and Harper. I wonder who the New Democratic Party will have as a replacement.

What's with the stupid Harper comments? >>;
Anyway, I was pretty shocked to hear this. I, like many others, expected him to return to office soon. May he rest in peace.

Harper isn't really a bad guy. It's just that he is a Conservative that doesn't seem like that nice of a guy compared to Layton. I like Harper much more than Ignatieff though.

Ignatieff is long gone though (God he looked creepy) Really the liberals are pretty lost as far as I know with no real future unless they get their acts straight ._.

I just hate the guy.
I'm sure 1 on 1 he's a nice guy, but as a politician he's pissing me off and that's what matters.
I'm considering leaving the country when I'm in a position to do so because of this guy and a few other factors specific to canada.

Yeah I heard about this, I'm kinda sad. He was really reaching out to specifically the youth, seemed like a genuine guy who cared about Canada.
>: Maybe he rest in peace.

o.o
You wrote that very confusingly.
Anyways... Harper is our current Prime Minister and is the party leader of the Conservatives (basically, the Canadian equivalent of the Republican Party). Layton was the leader of the NDP (New Democratic Party). NDP is the current opposition (they got the second largest amount of votes from ridings). Layton recently stopped working to battle cancer. He died recently. I can't really say why most people dislike Harper but he just wasn't as likable as Layton IMO. Harper is also right wing, while I am left wing.
