Never seen it used it mabi but it's pug this pug that everywhere in vindi. I would never said pug in normal mabi but rather "go with randoms".

pug (pick-up group) is a pretty standard mmo term.

luckily, pugs aren't that terrible in Vindictus and you can usually win unless they're really terrible.

I don't really use the term PUG either (and I always thought it meant public unorganized group), but perhaps it's due to the type of people this game caters to.

A game that actually has PUGs means it's not on the verge of dying and means it's somewhat casual (like vindictus). A game that doesn't have PUGs means it's on the verge of dying and/or not that casual (like mabinogi)
I don't mind organized runs, but when a game no longer has PUGs you can just hop in and play, I lose faith in the game already...
And before you say mabinogi still has some PUGs...I really disagree. I haven't seen any peaca PUGs since maybe a year ago. It just doesn't work in mabinogi, you can create your own party in peaca and no one will ever join, not even in hours. Conversely in vindictus I can create just about any mission in the game and a few will join in due time. So that is a key difference for me. Besides, even excepting "hard" ish runs like maiz or peaca, it is next to impossible to join any PUG you can actually want to participate in even in the most populated zone like the altar for shadow mission. Mostly people afking there, it's basically impossible to get a PUG going when a game has a really dwindling population like that.
The reason a lot of maplestory servers are called "Dead" is because it's relatively harder to get a PUG going (for anything). Like for PQs (any pq, from dojo to lpq to hpq) to levelling (partying in LHC) etc. In El Nido for example, it's just a lot harder to get a PUG going than say scania or windia.
So in summary, I'd say the relative easiness of getting a PUG is a good measure of how populated the server/game is.
