Never seen one built that way, it's pretty much a USB drive stuck inside a larger USB enclosure.
I often break open USB drives to put inside servers without having the casing get in the way (to install ESXi on it) and it looks like that minus the smaller USB drive.
You can also use that little thing inside as a USB drive by itself, you can even buy them like that too, I have one I keep in my wallet with encrypted stuff on it.

That's more of a Micro SD Adaptor/USB Drive, it doesn't have a built in memory card of it's own, your to provide a Micro SD Card, which might be why it looks weird...?
Anyways, I wouldn't keep it like that, mines get scrapped and scratched a lot and if that happened without the outside parts, it'd probably stop working already.

There's also simple SD cards (not micro) that looks exactly like the Micro Adapter, but is simply the card itself. It's a little outdated, but it still exists and holds its own memory (not the micro card's memory, since it doesn't have one).
OT: That's pretty interesting. I wouldn't doubt it if any SD card would work (micro adapter or not).

I have a USB drive that I ended up biting the casing off of. I have a nasty habit of chewing on anything my mouth can get on. Pencils, pens, USB drives. Nothing is safe from my biting. But that's another story.
