I just hopped on facebook this morning and of course, for some reason I have a bunch of younger elementary students on my buddy list from my old school for some odd reason. Oh well, I use them mainly for cityville. Yes I play facebook games. Don't judge me >.< (You already have I'm sure though).
Anyways, back on topic. I noticed a 9th grader chatting about having their class meeting and prepping speeches and heck even the Teacher responded with some useful info and told them to spread it to other 9th graders via facebook. My my, the uses of technology.
You can easily get word out on meetings and what not. Of course with every good side there is a bad side as well I'm sure.
What do you guys think?

I thought you were against Facebook and all things social network a few weeks ago.
Of course Facebook is useful for many things, one of them being that idea you just suggested. It's just like having a course website for a class you're teaching or whatnot. I dunno how well it could work, but a Facebook Group could serve as means for announcements or whatnot. I'd lean more towards having an actual website for the matter though or even something like a Wordpress or a Blogspot.

My friend's school does it, it's the only reason why she has a Facebook, because school council meetings and whatnot are planned on it, and they have discussions occasionally.
I think that's rather dumb, but that's just me.
Also, in MA, teachers are not allowed to add students or join student groups on Facebook, and must deny friend requests for students. Pretty obvious as to why.

I am mostly against facebook when idiocy is around it. I personally don't like social networks that much. I only do it for the game to pass time. Not sure why I like cityville so much but that's another story.
However, I do use it to keep in touch with my relatives who are spread all over the place like my biological father, my brother in Virginia, my sister Heather back home, and sometimes my brother Frank in Japan although I mainly use Skype to communicate with him.

The theater tech group I'm in at my school uses Facebook to announce when we're going to be meeting and whatnot. Which is really a shame since I don't have a Facebook, nor do I intend to make one.

I feel like its a great tool for organizing events and meetings because lets face it if your in school chances are you have a facebook account and check it frequently (at least everyone in my school including me did and still does XD) its not so much that its an amazing tool its more that its extremely popular and easy to access.

Haha, I used to play Cityville~
But my high school did this all the time. Sometimes they even do it for football games...
And there are two teachers in particular I see posting on people's statuses very often, with useful tips and whatnot.

Iunno, maybe some people can't afford phones and computers at the same time, and they end up having to do normal home phone calls, or just meet in person if they need to hold any meetings of some sort. There are other forms of technology for communication, but we use them less now because it seems less convenient and compact, despite the prices.
Facebook mobile...Now there's sort of a commonly used one besides texting a whole bunch of contacts in a group. I don't think Facebook overall would really be that useful, since I don't like social networking sites, because I'm really, not that social at all. Or even go add people as a friend freely, since I'm generally shy with people I already know at school.
Mt teachers used Facebook to communicate with their students, but otherwise, they gave the people in the class their home phone number, and their e-mail address a a secondary contact. I really do like it when teachers put into consideration of others who may not have Internet or not be able to afford Internet, since there's one guy in my class that doesn't have a computer at home, nor a cell phone.
I used to play Pet Society, but now I don't really play it, nor do I use Facebook at all. Created it in Middle School because my friends kept telling me to go make one, so I did. I never really used it after that since I came to High School though.

I have a few of my high school teachers as friends on Facebook and I'm not at all ashamed.
It's all about being mature, IMO. I've remained really good friends with my high school math teacher (who is now a principal for another school) and one day, she invited me and two other classmates of mine out for dinner. This was a few years ago, of course.
It's all about networking. Teachers are people too. And who knows, maybe in the future that same math teacher can help me out with getting a real job somewhere. Never underestimate the power of connections.
Of course, I don't recommend friending your teachers, professors or employers if you got a bunch of sketchy pictures of you drinking or smoking weed on Facebook, or if all you know how to post as statuses are just F words and vulgarities. That makes you look really bad.
Edit: I seem to have misunderstood your post. You were wondering how a teacher could friend a student on Facebook, when in MA it's not allowed.
I agree, it shouldn't be allowed while the teacher is teaching the student, but I think former students are fair game.

Indeed.
I'm actually suddenly finding myself in an odd situation like this...
My mom wants to invite my history teacher (who was my teacher last year, not this year, and will be next year) and her fiance over to watch football. I was just like "LOLWHAT", then I was like, "Is that even allowed...?"
My mom was like, "Well, she's not your teacher this year, so that should be fine, right?", but i'm not really sure.
(But, i'll ask anyways, because she's awesome, and the worst thing that'll happen is she says no, right?)
