They used liquid nitrogen (and later, liquid helium) as a heatsink. :XD:

sounds like a costy computer to keep running.

What would even NEED a 8.4GHz processor LOL ....owait, imagine Super Computers with those...
If it produced THAT much heat, how would it be possible to even make one that powerful in the distant future, without the whole computer burning up :P

Well...that's the entire point of the liquid helium heat sink. But this seems pretty cool, I know you can get liquid cooling systems for your PC but they cost quite a bit if I remember correctly. As for who would need it...Vindictus dedicated raid servers? That's be nice if they had that power.

and yet AMD isn't releasing their Komodo CPUs anytime soon
so we're stuck with the current Sandy Bridge prices.

This is their Bulldozer core powered chip which will be released in a few months. Think of it as a promotional stunt. xP

Maybe 10 years later (or 20 years), an average person will own a 8 ghz computer with 12 cores or something crazy for a cheap price.

Guiness gives like $10,000 for setting a new record. So it's not really like they were actually out of any money.

A lot of things need 8 GHz, but we do it by having multiple cores/processors in one system, and having many systems clustered together.
At work we have hosts for virtual machines that total in the 100 GHz range if you add up the processing power, not even sure how much RAM we have but it's scary.
Having that much power on a single chip would reduce operational costs and TCO a lot.

Well, isn't this interesting. You'd have to use the computer in a walk in cooler practically. Make sure to wear lots of hats and gloves and warm clothing!
