I never believed anyone with a mental disorder should take drugs.
Mainly because I believe everyone in this world has a mental "disorder" of some sort and some are just more socially acceptable than others.
Drugs, on the other hand, just f*** you up.

Some people really do need 'em (i.e. bipolar folks), but I agree.

Some of them are just stupid. Apparently i have attention deficit from reading the info on wikipedia. I have difficulty focusing on one thing for more than 5 minutes, i often daydream, and my friend tells me that at the school dances and the one rave i went to i would often be distracted and just watch the pretty lights.
Does it hurt me? no, i learned to use it to multitask incredibly well. My schoolteachers would see my homework and notice that there are few questions from each section are done, along with some pretty stick figures and drawings or plans for a story. The homework gets done in the end, but not in the same way as everyone else.
Im not sure if i actually would be classified with it, but im fairly sure that at age 7 or so, me and my cousin would often use the waterbed for a trampoline and i would be incredibly hyperactive in addition to the attention problems i have. I remember cracking my head open cause someone walked in the door while i was jumping off the dresser and i turned to look at them. Fun times, and i got to show off my stitches in school later.
Anyway, pumping children full of drugs because they have a lot of energy or aren't paying attention isnt helpful. Its lazy.
edit- "not seem to listen when spoken to" school was too easy for me in middle school and part of high school, so those classes that i got board in i would take a light nap and daydream, while waking up to answer questions when my name was called.
My mom subbed one of my classes one day and i didn't even notice because of this. She apparently was very shocked when she saw me sleeping in class though, until the student teacher told her it was fine and that i always do that.

the role of psychiatric medicine is for people who severely need them to function in society

I have an aunt who would feed my cousins massive bowls of food and expect them to eat them all.
My cousins are pretty fat now. They never wanted to eat that much but their mom was pretty strict so it was basically impossible for them to not do it. My aunt is quick to terrify them by yelling and if that doesn't work, they'd know she would hit them...so...Yeah...
I'm shy. I don't need to be "treated" for it. I'm overcoming it slowly by meeting people with my interests and talking to them.

Well damn, being shy is a disorder now. Now we all have excuses for being bad at something. :V

Yeah, that's still all pretty dumb though. For being shy, you get called out for having a disorder of some sort.
And medication to fix someone else's feelings and emotions properly is like forcing them to do what they may not want to, not letting them overcome their shyness themselves.

Americans looooove to prescribe pills. We, minorities, tend to force our kids to get over things.

This is ridiculous..
This reminds me of something that happened to a friend of mine the other week. He's a shy guy but that's just him, and one day in class one of the teachers noticed him sitting there being quiet like he normally is, she thought that he was depressed and made him go see the counsellor. He was like what the ****.
This thing is bull****, and I probably fall into one of these disorders.

What's funny is my being so reserved and quiet at first actually was a mental disorder, but I'm just special like that.
It's good to see that people are finally giving a sh*t instead of saying "Liek LOL it's all in your head get over it :3", since that is one of the most retarded things you could possibly do. However, they really are crossing the line with saying every single person who has some sort of social struggle has a mental illness. Uhm, no. They're kids. They're human. They all have issues, just those issues aren't always mental.
I hate how they call depression and anxiety disorders, it makes it sound like it's a bad thing. Disorders should be limited to sociopathy/autism/etc and sh*t. That is a disorder/mental illness.
But then again, Psychologists who themselves have never had any sort of issues love to act like some sort of important figure, so. Not surprised.
